Hey all,

Never posted here before, but I'm trying to put the finishing touches on this song and I'm interested to know how it's sounding through other people's speakers (and ears!). If there's anything weird or bad (performance included -- I'm very open to redoing any of the parts) please let me know.

Recording details:
Software: ProTools LE 7, MBox2
Mic: Studio Projects C1, used on vocal (me) and thumb piano
Ukulele: Kala tenor (KA-ASMTE-C) recorded directly from Shadow pickup
Steel Guitar: Epiphone (SQ-180) recorded with ContactMics.com contact mic
Rhythm Guitar: Martin (XC1T) recorded directly from built in Fishman Ellipse
Bass and conga: SampleTank 2 MIDI
Melodyne Essential: pitch correction on vocal
Various plugins, let me know want details.

Ahhh...Wow! That was definitely unique! Maybe a straighter drum track would help frame the arrangement and steady the boat...The bongos could work mixed lower and panned out.

I mean, this is such a swampy, chaotic sound-scape! I don't mean that in a bad way! This could be a soundtrack to a cool, groovy animation short with fisherman and stuff...I don't know! :eek::o:)
 
Thanks, man. I think panning out the conga is a great idea, so I went ahead and did that. I think it does sound better now... keeps your ears engaged a little more.

It is very different. I was not expecting the hillbilly voice on this song.

I may be going out on a limb a bit here, but I wanted to give you my response to your song. I read the lyrics before listening, and found them to be quite endearing. I was looking forward to a simple, sort of country song to go along with what I felt when I read the words. I know it's a lot of work to lay down all of those tracks for a song, but, I just have to say, I think the song would be served better with very simple musical accompaniment. You are telling a story, and it seems like you would want to create the mood of that simple memory, at Chubb Lake, with the music.

One more thing that may be of use to you: If you create a band page on soundclick.com, you will give your listeners the opportunity to simply stream your songs, without having to download them. This comes in handy when you are receiving critiques, and then posting new, or remixed versions, of the same songs! You might notice a lot of folks on this forum have soundclick pages. Some have them as part of their business - and sell their songs or albums. Others use their page to post their work as a hobby - like me.

Well, you may be right... I was trying to make something unique that would grab the listener's attention, but perhaps the arrangement was ill conceived. It is essentially a folk song at heart and I do perform it solo with just ukulele and it comes off fine. Overkill, maybe.

Really cool...love the slightly off kilter vibe on this!!! Those lyrics are great! Very diffrent...mix sounds wide and full on my setup....great playing! Awesome! I dig it just the way it is!!!

Much better Chris! The mix is now very open and I can hear all the cool, moody slide guitar bits. The bongos sit better and the vocals have supprt harmonically from the nylon string guitar part Cool!
 
Yeah, thanks for the tip, my friend. I knew that it needed something like that and I had tried experimenting with panning the uke and steel guitar around during the solo, but it just came out distracting.

Believe it or not that is a tenor ukulele you're hearing and not a classical guitar... though what's the difference, really?
