This a song I originally posted months ago. It was instrumental. Then Sluice did some vocals. If anyone remembers it was called "Work a Little Harder", and it got some pretty good reviews. Later, Chris approached me talking all kinds of shit about the Sluice version. "I can sing circles around that bastard, he smells bad," yadda yadda yadda.... I was like, "no, man he rocks" Then Chris came over and punched my girlfriend in the mouth. And asked if I had any more backtalk I wanted to share. I said no. He knocked over a couple flower pots on the way out.

Actually, none of that happened at all. Chris just wanted to try his own version of the song and I was happy to oblige. I re-did the music and he sent me some vox. Then we changed a couple things (remember the spice girls, Chris?;) ) then he sent some more vocals. I was a total dick and suggested like two tiny little parts that might need changed. So what does he do? He gives me 4 MORE VULL TRACKS OF VOX!! Anyway, here's the latest version of a process we started I don't know how long ago.

What Do You Want

wow.. very bright and 'strong'. These are real drums aren't they?
Exactly I like every aspect of it (which was to be expected actually).

Hearing the crash cymbal now; I'm starting to doubt about the reality of the drums. And maybe the vocals need a bit more smoothing verb, it sounds a little too dry to me.

Heheh.. cool ending. Very commercial (in a positive way) and great sounding (recording and songwriting) to my opinion.

Man, that 'chrisharris' guy is nothing but asshole and autotune. I'd like this tune if it weren't for the lyrics and the way he sings it like an 11 year old girl.

Hearing this up against Insecticide, I'm at a total loss as to why I'm singing...lmao.

From a mix standpoint...I'd ditch that scream at the beginning...(you know, the one that was there just to sync up the tracks, lmao). You did a couple of little vocal things... like @ 1:20 after "Heartless Machine"... I sorta' like that. The thing @ 1:45 is kind of weird, though...

Mostly, I just think you're funny. That first paragraph cracked me up, lmao...IT'S FUNNY B/C IT'S TRUE!!!

You're a good guy. I hope this backfires horribly on you and everybody makes fun of it. :D

I knew you wouldn't like what I did:D I just wnated to be in there a little, I tried to really bury my part, now I'll just take it out! Listening this morning gave me a new perspective. I was working on this till late last night.

That tune sounds alive. Its got the dynamic presence, flavor, and plenty of meat in it. The singing is cool. I couldnt understand some of the lyrics but I like the melody they played. After that double hook there`s a nice spot at 2:18 that could really support a "wicked spawn of satan and blistering" short solo on a guitar over that locomotive rythym. The drums sounded good here. I didnt get a real buzz on the bass and kick, but the tune is really punchy.

Now who said I didn't like something. Actually, I didn't realize it was a "you" part...I figured you just pasted some part of my vocal in that second spot...

Naw, really...my only gripe is with the spliced scream at the beginning (I know YOU didn't splice it...it's the one from the end, right?). I originally had the full version of the lung-ejecting scream on the front end, but it really screws with your head to have it on the front AND the back...gives that weird car drive-by effect if it's looped, lol.

I just really like the tune...and I'm glad I hadn't heard you or sluice sing this when I asked you if I could horn in on it...I never would have asked, lol. Thanks for the shot.

So who wrote the lyrics and melody. The melody is really good for the song. I mean it sticks pretty hard with you especially he chorus. I think the lyrics are pretty cool, I just want to hear them better. I could not make them all out.

I thought the production was pretty cool. I am not so sure about the screams. It does not quite seem like that kind of scream song.

The guitars were cool once again.

Oh yeah one last nitpick, I don't like the last :10 or so. It seemed forced or it just lost mementum.

Oh - weird paste or something at :29 (I swear the last comment)

I think you have a good thing here. Real nice collab!

Sounds great, too bad Chris Harris is singing on it. Seems like everything he touches, changes into a big smelly turd.

:D

No, it's cool. Chris rocks too (but he always does, and I get frustated by giving him good reviews...LOL :D)

I'm getting to the point where I can't tell if it's just the sound Chris' voice has or steenkin autotune on everything.

I think it's autotune.....grrrr.

Just giving ya shit Chris, sounds great.

I agree the vocal could use a bit of verb and the first vocal yell has no place there.

Hey Buster - are you singing "you can" @ 1:17? lol...I thought that was me. I like that one...leave it.

Okay, I've spun it a few more times, and I'm wanting 2 things, neither of which are you obligated to do or even consider, lmao.

1. The "screams" in the middle of the tune seem a little hotter than the rest of the vocal. Any way to envelope those down a db or 2? Also, I couldn't figure out how to hollow the screams out enough...got a bullhorn effect at the ready?

2. The backups directly under the chorus are low for my taste...I'm thinking that if I didn't know that they were there, I wouldn't know that they're there. hehehee...Of course, they're so freaking autotuned, you're probably doing me a favor, lol. Also, I'm used to mixing bg vocals like a damned bluegrass band, so I defer to you on this totally. :D

[lame joke]

You don't exactly need to 'give' him shit, Jake...he's already full of it.

[/lame joke]

Thanks everyone for the input. Except you Chris. Just kidding. Yes that is me singing "You Can" I just always heard that in my head at that part so I stuck it in. Actually I stuck in a number of things. I've got Vox in a lot of spots but I hid 'em good. I agree about the lead vox being dry, At home I can hear the reverb a lot better than on other systems. I'm going to add a bit more tonight. I'll also bring up the BG's a little. I was just afraid I'd overdo it like on my last song so I tried to err on the lesser side this time. I was going to lose the beginning scream but I thought you wanted it there. But we can't piss Jake off can we?Or is it we can't NOT piss Jake off. At any rate if I get the time I'll make some tweaks tonight and upload whilst I sleepeth.

You know, that's an interesting question...I think it's a combo, lol. Here's why. When I first recorded this, before I even put reverb on the vocal or anything, I let Jamal Buchet preview it. He's all..."DUDE, I'm hearing autotune..." - There wasn't any...so I sent him the dry track so he could tell...His comment after hearing it was that I need to stay away from immediate pitch changes, lol.

I'm just resigned to being the clinic whipping boy for Antares. I don't care, lol.

(and the backups are autotuned like a freaking synthesizer...)...

If you manage to sound like you've used it without using it Chris, you can be america's most wanted studio vocalist. And Antares will go bankrupt, that's for sure.

You are so hip, it makes me sick :D

That'd be me...sort of. I wrote the lyrics, and then I sang it (sort of), then mbuster reminded me that the key to doing this song was to just never forget that despite all the changeups, it's just "4/4" all the way, so he kinda' directed the phrasing.

Man, I need to resing the first first couple of lines...I sound like a corn farmer, lol.

Naw... you made a good call on that on like, version 12, lmao. The song needs to just start.

Is that some kind of Iowa joke? Just cause we're the corn state doesn't mean we all farm it. There's beans too you know.

but I think it's good as is.

Chris,
Just curious. When you sent Jamal those tracks that were not autotuned, were they compressed? I think compression sometimes has that processed sound which can be intepreted as AT.

It sounds good but I don't care for country.....

:D

It does sound good and it's interesting to hear Chris sing something different. Ya'll might have a song writing team here.

But once you tell Chris you don't want to be his gay lover, he gets all uppity, at least that's what he did to me.

BAHAHAhahaha...actually, it wasn't. At least, not consciously. I just meant that my "drawl" was a little more apparent that I'd like.

Man, what a self-centered jackass you are...IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU, EH?

lol... Iowa...no, I wasn't even thinking about that.
