Keep in mind I am definately an amateur at this...

I've been doing some recording and it has been going fine. I reached the mixing process of the first song... and once I started to put reverb on the drums and chorus on the guitars, i could not play the song back without severe choppiness - even when i set the load gadget thing to mix entire song in advance. i have done what has been suggested by the program to optimize playback so i realize i probably need a computer upgrade. what is it that i need to make it play back smoothely? please get back to me! thanks

jesse

The need for a pc upgrade rather depends what you've got now - it's a...?

list your pc config IN FULL !
i'll make suggestions.
peace.

How do I find out what my pc has??? Sorry I'm such an idiot!

On PC, right click on "My Computer", select Properties.

The "General" tab will have some specs of your computer.

Intel Pentium 3 496 Mhz
256 MB of Ram

It's a compaq presario... same soundcard that it came with

you have a nice powerfull pc capable of loads of tracks. YOUR PROBLEM IS MEMORY. particularly running cool and windows XP (if thats the OS your using). cool in particular seems to like lots of memory to work well as its a very sophisticated program. tell me if your running XP. if you are note that XP and cool needs 512 ram. also tell me how many tracks you record before things get "choppy (forgetting mixdown). just regular recording /playback.
also MAKE SURE YOU HAVE DMA ENABLED ON YOUR HARD DRIVES.
if you dont , go back to the dealer that sold it to you and give him heck.
no dealer should sell a PC with your speed of processor without installing 512
ram and enabling DMA. also if u have ONE HARD DRIVE, tell me.
who sold the PC to you ?

it was a gift... i can't really complain about it or i'll seem ungrateful. this is like a seinfeld episode.

how do i make sure DMA is enabled?

and by memory, you mean RAM?

without seeming funny, if your serious about a daw you really need to learn a bit about windows functions. this is basic stuff.
it will also save you lots of problems. theres lots of info on the net on how windows works and various functions. also tons of windows books in libraries.
dma = direct memory access. if not enabled on hard drives it leads to poor performance of the pc. if your unsure get a pc tech to check your system.
go into control panel>>>system>>>device manager>>hilite disc drive then click PROPERTIES button and a dialog displays showing whether dma is ticked.
peace.

If you don't have XP, you might consider an upgrade to it. I ran Win98SE for several years and had come to believe that crashes were normal! I finally changed over to XP and I have not had a crash or hangup in 9 months, now.
