Choppers leaving Saigon

I like it....I don't hear anything out of place...seems pretty cohesive to me. Choppers in the intro were loud, but that's sorta cool....had a different atmoshpere. The rest seems to fit together well.

Good tune man....
 
This sounds a little "brighter" than the previous mix - in a good way. Have you eq'd differently or applied a different plug-in? I'd say the levels are pretty good.

The writing here is very good - like a short political thriller....

As I sit here with my morning java enjoying to this I couldn't help but compare the ending flute section to the long jams they had back in the late 60's early 70's. Quite impressive, that.

cool song Rayc :) i like the choppers and didnt' find them loud in the beginning. i found them not loud enough in the end. and i really like the flute piece at the end of the song. i don't have anything to say on the mix as it seems i heard everything fairly well.

Thanks mate - i worried about the choppers but I did want to get a little of the sense of pressure they generate - even though of putting the chopper tracks out of phase to get that pressured sound but then I'd lose a lot of bottom end & that's even more a part of them. You're very kind.

The ending was a jam, you can hear me getting ipatient too - the choppier riffing trying to signal Terry to cut to the case - a bit of a laugh now. There's less compression on the final mix, I think I use a little maixmizer on the last one so this would sound less thick(?). After working on the "controversial" lyric last week I remembered this & the original plan for choppers so I signed up to a sound FX site & heunted some down. Thanks for the generous words.

I've cranked up & slightly extended the end choppers! Thanks for the mix comments - Terry has to get his flute worked oon before he can use it again - the felts or something are cactus at present. (This little ditty was recorded in 1986 & reworked/augmented/remixed in 05 & again now). Ta for the encouragement.

Your vocal phrasing and some of the melodies remind me of Ian Anderson. It's a cool tune. If I had a producer's hat and if I put it on, my only suggestion would be to change up the rythym guitar during the choruses, or with the chopper, make it more aggressive or change the tone to create some tension

Ta mate - I did search for a Huey - they sound VERY aggressive. I could locate one specifically. No luck so far. I used some heavy compression but haven't been able to replicate the sound as yet.
When you say change up the chorus r/git do you mean a diff git or tonality or a key change?

Yeah I was thinking more in terms of the tone + volume. At the moment the guitar is fairly homogeneous throughout. Keep the same chords but maybe double up the guitars for more presence and add a little overdrive for seasoning to give some impact during the choruses or a middle 8. I'm starting to rave now, so I'll stop :D

With the other link I usually get a white page with play song which I click. This will take you a page with a list of tracks - this new version is So Long Shuffle FXD2 at the top of the list. The changes to soundclick surely have me bamboozled. Did they give notice of the impending confusion?

Now I understand. I'll have to wait until my main ecording comp gets repaired however (it crashed on Boxing Day) as I'm just twiddling with the last mix I did. I will try those ideas though. I'll mark the chorus by the lyric as there isn't a musical one.
 
Sounds great! If I were to tweak anything, it would be to make the panning of the helicopter in the beginning and the end a little smoother -- it seems like the left or right snaps on/off or close to it.
 
Sounds great! I liked the helicopter effect. Definitely a Tull feel here. I like the tone you have going on with the guitar chugging. I have no complaints.
 
Sounds pretty good Ray. Vox sound a little thin and dry. I don't think it's a mix issue though. I'm thinking whoever sang it was a little timid maybe? Maybe wetting them down a little with some verb or a quick slap-back delay will fatten the sound some.

The rest sounds great. I like the choppers. :D

the helicopter sounds are awesome. takes me right back to apocalypse now and wagner. (sadly enough also to goodnight saigon, a tune i wish i'd forgotten)

the bass and guitar are really tight, great playing. excellent flut solo! the way that flute's been recorded with a lot of sound directly from the edge of the mouthpiece is pretty cool and really works. it gives it a slight 'distorted guitar' quality. or did you add an effect there? i don't think so.

the mix is impeccable

Yeah, Tull began the Agrarian Revolution with that simple little device.

Thanks for the kind words. Terry was influenced by Anderson in the breathy aspects of that recording. The only effect on it is a result of being recorded to portastudio with the inbuilt pre that I quite like. thanks for the kind words.

Ta cobber - the guitar (an old Bruno royal artist semi acoustic) was recorded with some treble boost through an Ibanez Renometer into a Marshall superbass amp & mic'ed with a Realistic Hiball dynamic. Oh, & I think I taped some foam over the bridge to give it a little damping.
 
I think the chopper sound fits just right. :)

Good flute sound, though its tone gets a little odd near the end. Agree that a change in the gtr tone in different sections of the song would add a lot.
 
I like the atmosphere of the choppers...I'm listening on headphones and they are panned really hard right and then suddenly come in on the left as well...maybe a more subtle pan would be nice , kinda have them move right to left or slowly fade in.....nice rhythm guitar sound...very cool / interesting lyrics....flute is awesome in this and just adds to the overall vibe. I enjoyed this!

The changes made on the mix at this link are the use of actual Huey soundclips. & a little less movement of the choppers.

ta mate! I'll have to combine the stereo chopper files to onon so I can pan them better - at present they're in their original stereo & the panning is as recorded. I'll get to it.
 
This song is pretty cool. The tune is pretty neat. Nice melody. The chopper sounds remind very much of M*A*S*H. :D

1:40 - 2:05 - The bass is sounding overpowering.

Not getting this bass overload myself - it's prominent but not overly so IMHO...

The first verse ould use an envelope to turn vocals up a bit to match the rest of the song.

There's a couple of really hot esses in there - not sure how you would eq those...

The real hueys add a bunch of cool to the mix...

I like the dry vocals - you could add a bit of reverb if you like but I'm not really missing it...
