Guys

Looking for some guidance re a respectable pre-amp for use with condenser mike and accoustic guitar for digital recording. Looking for warm tube / valve sound at an affordable price (equivalent of $100 approx). Any thoughts?

Cheers, The Foal

Two very good "affordable" preamps to own is the M-Audio Tampa - $300.00 or Studio Projects VTB $100.00+

The Electro Harmonix tube pre is excellent. $185 I have one and a second being shipped to me at the moment. There are a number of recent threads about it.

what interface do you use? the built in pres are probably at least as good as anything you can get for cheap. the cheapest pre I would recommend as an upgrade is an RNP at $450 for 2 channels. Anything cheaper probably won't be an improvement.

Oh, almost forgot, GAP pre-73 is really nice too for $300 for 1 channel. Nice and warm, probably do exactly what you're looking for.

Those are the only two pres i'd recommend in the "cheap" range.

For a little over $100, the M-Audio DMP3 is nice for acoustic guitar in particular and good for most other things. And it is 2 channels. It is warmer than most mixer pres but has no "tubes/valves".

This thread is 6 years old. I bet he already has a preamp.-Richie

haha, i just looked at the last couple of posts and saw they were recent. Whoops, guess I should be more careful.

Hopefully he has a preamp and some killer songs by now.

It's good that this thread came up again... it's one of those questions that continue to pop up every now and again anyway.

Has anybody had experience with the BlueTube stuff? A friend of mine swears by his but I think it's pretty noisy, personally.

I have the presonus TubePre...if that is what you're talking about. I've never heard anything magical from it. It is kinda noisey, and it just stopped working a few weeks ago, of course it is 8 years old. Others have really liked it, but I've never found a use for it.
