thanks for all your help, guys.

should i give C16 and C17 go? i have the parts...

Good job ghetto3jon. That mic has definitely become usable. It's still bright, but in a much nicer way. It was sizzling before.

Next thing to do is probably to replace all those ??tantalum?? parts.

Nice!

I hope I can get the same out of the 185s I just got. If you go ahead and replace the other caps, please post a few clips. It's great to have these before-and afters. Happy modding.

BTW, How much is there to be gained from replacing ALL of the tant caps?

It depends on if they are in the signal path or not. As Gus has pointed out before, tants are not necessarily bad, just a matter of taste and it depends on the circuit. It's ceramic and electrolytic that are the bad sounding caps. Tants aren't all that great, but they are not bad really.

When you get to a point where the mic seems ok after capacitor replacement, make sure to upgrade the capsule. I just put a K47 style capsule from Soundelux (David Bock) in a Royer tube circuited V67G with Cinemag transformer and tracked a vocal with it.

Oh...my...God!!!!!!

I will never track vocals with a chinese mic EVER again!!!!!

Consider a Peluso PK47! Trust me!

I was going to do that mod a while back and alot of people discouraged me from doing it. Are there many Sibilance issues? I know the mojave audio ma100 (the ldc one) mics have been described as haveing alot of sibilance. Would the v67/royer be well matched with a neve or api preamp?

and out of curiosity, How does it compare to the telefunken u47 clone u tried?

The sibilance issues are really caused by the use of a K67 style capsule. That type of capsule has a high rise that is just above 6k and up into the 10k area. Not to mention that the chinese capsules are not tuned correctly, so it makes them worse. It's not the circuit design that causes the sibilance. This is the main reason the U67 uses negative feedback in the circuit, to null those peaks in the upper range. If that capsule is left without it, it's naturally got a very bright peak in those frequencies.

A K47 or M7 capsule backplate is less fussy about the tuning, but if tuned to Neumann tension and spacing specs, it is really good. K47 and M7 are much more flat and really nice in the upper frequencies, so it's a really good match for this circuit. I also think that the Jensen transformer is too high a ratio. 10:1 or less would be better. I'm using a Cinemag 2840, which is 10.5:1.

The U47 style mic I built really can't be touched by anything in my collection of DIY mics because the capsule is a real M7 re-skinned by Siegfried Thiersch. I also have a 7:1 Lundahl in that mic. I may try a BV8 in that mic soon just to see what a difference it makes.

This combo was really surprising in it's performance, though. I think the PK47 is probably the absolute best possible capsule for use in this mod.

would the mod be worth doing? what vocal chain were you useing.

I now have a jlm baby animal with one neveish and one api-ish channel. id be little worried about the vocal chain have a little 2 much "balls" to it haha. The pre amo has had me side tracked from my mic mods. im thinking of getting the CM-24110 xformer for my mic.

only question now is if i recap it or if i gut it. want to help me decide?

Something I'm about to try with a K67 in a royer mic is to shunt the output to ground before the output cap with a 500pF Cap and roll off some of the highs. That may be a way to fix sibilance issues without NFB.

i know it's been a while, but i randomly decided to pop a Peluso CEK-89 capsule in this mic just for fun, and holy crap. this thing sounds completely different. the cap replacement was subtle (like most mods, in my experience), but this is intense. check it out:

stock capsule:

peluso capsule:

for better or worse, it's a completely different mic now!
