Does anyone have a list of companies that have their mic's made by 797 audio? Thanks.

If I'm not wrong, Studio Projects has its mikes made by 797.

Cheers!

Yes, 797 Audio makes the Studio Projects mic's, do you know the other companies 797 Audio makes mic's for, I'm looking for a list?

RECORDING MAGAZINE did a DYI article on upgrading the 797 Shanghai Mics.....there was also a full list of who imported them and what models they sold them as .... I'm still loking for my back copies ... if I find it I'll post it.

That would be the January 2002 issue. Oddly enough, the only RECORDING MAGAZINE I have.

DK,

Is there any way that you can post that list (accurately)..........or is that magazine available online?

The issue I have gives an email address of info@recordingmag.com so I assume they also have a website. I'll check it out and either provide link information or type out a list as accurately as possible.

Not surprisingly, the website is www.recordingmag.com

You can purchase the magazine online, but no articles are available online.

The list of mikes is a partial one. Here it is.

ADK A51, A51S, A51SD
Audix CX-101, CX-111, CX-211
Avlex AVS77, AVS79, AVS80
Nady SCM 900, SCM 910, SCM 920, SCM 980
SounDking SKEB001, SKEB002, SEKB006
Stagg MCO-7BK
Yorkville APEX 420, APEX 430

Marshall MXL2001P, MXL2002, V67G

The article says the Marshalls are not made at the Shanghai factory but the board configuration is identical.

The article was written by Scott Dorsey.

of these, what are considered good and crappy? Just wondering.

Kirstin

Thanks for that info. I thought it may have been related to Scott Dorsey's articles.

If he was saying that those mics all come from one factory (excl., Marshalls) then they are ALL made by Soundking who are one of the Chinese manufacturers and have nothing to do with 797 or Fielo (the other manufacturer).

kgirl,

From comments around here, I get the impression that ADK are reasonable, Nady are crappy, and the others.............who knows.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Does anyone know any other companies that have their mic's made by BEIJING 797 AUDIO Co.,Ltd.? Thanks.

The last reliable info I had was that 797 were only supplying RODE with capsules and manufacturing for Studio Projects. This was supposedly the extent of their "export" mics.

However, there is now a range of mics from Peak Audio in Melbourne that are sporting the 797 logo............so at this stage, until I find some "concrete" info I know nothing more.

797 is not Shanghai, they are in Beijing. Fielo and SoundKing are Shanghai, South China, as is the new Marshall factory. There is a big difference...

I seem to remember reading (I think on the SP webpage?) that BEIJING 797 AUDIO Co.,Ltd makes mic's for other companies besides their own and SP mic's... but which companies?

797Audio seems to be the manufacurer of the Behringer B1 and B2; they also made the early BPM microphones (although they claimed those were German made...). the Rode NT2, too, looks like an off-the-shelf 797 model. The Langevin LD (except for the electronics) was (or is?) made there, too.

What's more important, however, at least to me, is whether the mic is a custom design made to another company's specs or whether it is just another off-the-shelf 797 Audio mic. There is a big difference between, say, a Behringer LD and an Studio Projects LD although both are made in the same factory. The SP is a waaaayyy better mic than the Behringer. One of the reasons might be that Asians have different aesthetics; they seem to love high mids, for instance, and their off-the-shelf mics will be designed so as to sound good to their ears. The SP mics are designed to sound good to American ears. Being European I'm more in favor of the American flavor.

Which

These are the mic's that BEIJING 797 AUDIO makes, CR998, CR100 (vacuum tube), CR1-4, CR616, CR523, CR722, CR1-78. (FET), CD441, CD421, CD58, CDK404, which one of the (off-the-shelf) 797 AUDIO mic's looks like the Rode NT2?

The CR 100 and 616 look closest to the Rode NT2, but keep in mind that 797 changed the appearance of their mics over time, especially when it comes to the grill. When BPM came out with their CR79 II, which was an off-the-shelf 797 mic, it looked exactly like the NT2 does today. When BPM got sued by Neumann for copying their design, they came out with the design that you see on those 797 mics today. Rode, too, got sued by Neumann, and to this day you can't buy an NT2 in Germany. Rode didn't alter the design and even profited by the Neumann lawsuit in that a lot of people seemed to think that it's a complete and faithful copy of the U87. Some Germans even went so far as to import those mics from the UK for quite some money, thinking they got a U87 at roughly half the price.

If you want to read up on the NT2 and 797Audio, go to Google, hit "groups" and enter "interesting chinese mic site" which is the title of a very revealing thread on RAP. Of particular interest is reply 16 which contains a letter from a 797 engineer.

The CR100 and 616 don't look anything like the Rode NT2 to me.

Anyways, does anyone else know any other companies that have their mic's made by BEIJING 797 AUDIO Co.,Ltd.? Thanks.
