Ok, maybe this needs to go on the Newbie Board. Sorry, but many of these threads are not geared towards electronic music.

What I want to do:
1. Buy a new stereo to listen to music on cds at home.
2. Improve on my ability to mix tracks and eventually perform (small private parties)
3. evenutally make music using advanced software, such as Reason, maybe starting out with a simpler application.

Things I think I need:
-mixer - maybe 6 channel or so?

-dual cd players, prefer top loaders

-amplifier - Do I need to buy pro gear? Is pro gear as good as home audio? Why is pro gear cheaper in terms of power/price ratio? can I connect a mixer to a home audio amp and use it the same way as a pro amp?

-preamp? unless i already have an integrated amp i suppose.

-music creation software

assume i already have a decent computer with appropriate sound card.

What else do I need to know? What am I missing?
Sorry for all of the questions, but I thought I'd see I can get this all down on one thread. Thanks for any insight.

Dude, was there a question in there? I'm not clear on why you think listening to CD's requires a mixer at all. I mean Reason, if you want to use it, is software get a demo and try it. If you want to be a DJ just go over to the stereo and put a CD in.

clarification?

Maybe you didn't read the entire post. what I'm trying to do is the figure out the best and most cost-effective way to set up a system that is appropriate for both home listening and recording and mixing electronic music without buying redundant stuff to do both.

All you really need to get started is a good power amp, monitors, and the software.

Pro gear is better than home gear for many reasons. Reliability, ruggedness, power, clean audio being some of the main reasons.

If you are using a SoundBlaster than get a better sound card. Reason is a good program to get started on and there are many more. Are you going to be performing your own stuff or just mixing CD's?
