I got bored and decided to record an entire song with my LAPTOP BUILT IN MIC. it's not good at all, neither is the soundcard. and i'm suprised as to what i could do to clean it up a tad to make it decently presentable...

download there
left channel=les paul through jcm2000, right=strat through jcm2000
bass cab mic'ed, all low end, dropped all highs.
and i just put the laptop to the front left of the drums lol

btw the song is escape from the prison planet by clutch

Kudos. Considering the approach, it sounds a lot better than one could imagine. Decent detail between instruments, and (once it gets going) the music masks out the shortcomings pretty well. The drums/bass are tubby, but hey....:D

Nice test of what can be done if there is no other option.

Best,
Claus.

Probably won't listen but Escape From the Prison Planet is one of the best songs ever.

haha yeah i love clutch......i usually record with 3 AKG's and my sm57 through a samson 8 channel mixer into the laptop, but i got way too lazy and i only had like an hour before I had to leave so I was like, hey lets see how bad this mic is lol

First post-- logged in just to just give props to the Clutch cover.

I've heard much worse recordings from single laptop mics being passed off as full demos. Though there's some distortion and lack of clarity, apparently built in laptop microphones have improved in recent years? Heck, the natural balance sounds better than some novice mixes I've heard with a full entourage of microphones and gear.

Laptop mic shootout anyone? :D

haha i'm so glad theres other clutch fans here! yeah, the laptop i've got is a toshiba tecra a4. its got onboard sound, so theres nothing good about the soundcard or mic at all lol. i dont even know where the mic is on it! hell, i didnt figure out it even had one unitl a few weeks into having it. i thought it was funny just to record with this thing for the hell of it....but hey, keep informed about me, i'll record some "real" clutch covers soon enough with my actual setup ;)

Actually that mic isn't all that bad. Sounds like the mic is under a table cloth. As opposed to other similar mics that sound like they're in a closet in the next room over. Not as detailed as an LDC, and bit of a hum in there. But actually fairly good considering. Reminds me of how old cassette tapes sounded out of a boombox.

Damn good considering the circumstances.

Hell, its better than some of the stuff I've heard on this and other recording boards from people using significantly better stuff (this is mostly attributed to the tight performance in this example).
