Ok, in another thread we were talking about the new Sennheiser e609. Someone there posted some links to the different freq plots and noted that they were different.
I didnt have time to look at the time, but I was rather surprised by my leaning to liking the cheaper, $100 version more and it being a bit brighter.
There has been considerable bitching among the pro boards over the years about Sennheiser discontinuing the MD-409, which was the square one with the gold grill on it, and how the new e609 did not compare and was nothing like the 409.
Well... I finally got to go look at the 2 different pages on them, and look what I found... to my surprise, not only are the freq responce charts VERY different, the new one comes with this paragraph that the old one does not:
"The e609 Silver is based on the legendary MD 409 microphone. Able to withstand high SPLs without distorting, the e609 Silver's large flat-profile capsule facilitates extremely close miking
of guitar cabinets and is also suitable for drum miking, particularly toms. The e609 Silver's
super-cardioid design improves isolation in live sound reinforcement and recording applications
while its increased output and wider frequency response improves performance. Its sound inlet
basket, made of refined steel, is distinguished by a unique silver address side."
Note the "based on the 409" statement there. I have used several 409's on toms and guitars, and ALWAYS liked them a whole bunch. Several people when I posted the song I used the 409's on remarked about how good the toms sounded and the guitars, all 409's. That was my main reason for getting an e609, in hopes that it was like the 409. It was good, but not like a 409, which had a little more magic and versatility to it.
Now, here I siddenly see this mic for $100, and I find myself liking it quite a bit, perhaps even more than my all black e609.
I dont know what point I'm getting at here, but I am ordering another before the price magically goes up, and at $100, I would be bold enough to call anyone a fool for not jumping on at least one, if not a pair, of these mics. I am going to do some more testing (ordering another one anyway, regardless) and I will see if I end up loving it or not. It kind of reminds me of an SM57 in a roundabout way, if that helps, with a cooler midrange.
Does anyone know where I can find a freq responce chart for the original MD-409? It would be interesting to compare the two. I wish I had a 409 to test next to it, and I MIGHT be able to borrow one. I'll check on that after Derby is over, since today and all weekend everyone is closed and drunk around here.
I might order two if I can scrounge the dough, I'm really scared these might go up a bunch.
Peace.
