hi everyone, i just did a little experiment to see if it sounded better last time i posted a song on here you guys said not so many effects so this time i realy tried but i can tell wright now my eq is not set wright but it sounded much different before i decoded it for upload i dont know what happened. my playing is not the best and i already know that so if you could please just listen to it and give me some suggestions. i used compresion this time and i think it helped alot. thanks guys. the song is called dark side. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/flash2ace_music.htm

Hey Flash:

You sound a little defensive - no need to be...It's just music, man.

It sounds like you (or your encoder) really pumped the "hi's" on the guitar. It looks like it's going nuts above 7K or 8K; If it's not doing that on your wav, then your encoder may be compressing and expanding the crap out of it in that range. I don't know. I know that it's distracting and kind of abrasive right there. Everything else sounds good to me...but who the hell am I?

post lots,
-chris

Hey,

The balance sounded kinka left heavy. Your playing is fine and the effects start to create a mood. Why did it stop?:( Finish the vision and then we'll get to the mix.

Peace
Theron.

i didnt mean to sound defensive chris sorry. i may have done that myself when i eq it. im new to this stuff, recording is a fine art and mixing down is 90 percent of it. im still a bit rusty on my playing its been like 8 years since ive even owned a guitar or a keyboard, i just did this song as a example to a larger project im working on and i did a quick mixdown. i have a question when i use the compresion built into cakewalk 9 well actually it came from sonar its the compresion gate thingy i am using the acoustic guitar preset and adding it to the guitar track and then i added a little bit of the fx stereo reverb i think the preset was called room. and then when i mixed down i compressed it with a preset called final mixdown compresion and i put that on the whole song after i bounced the tracks to a stereo track and then i added eq i use the graphic eq built into cakewalk and i make like a smiley face with it, then i added fx reverb room preset again. am i missing somthing by doing it this way, should i use the presets or should i learn how to adjust all the effects manually. and the way i run my acoustic electric into my soundcard im not sure if its wright, i am using a stereo cable and since the guitar is mono i have a adapter that plugs into the guitar and splits the mono signal left and right then i run into a 1/4 to 1/8 inch adapter into my line in and the adapter is stereo and i set the track in cakewalk to stereo. is this the wright way to do it? thinks for the compliments and the criticism, i dont take any of it personally and i realy respect your opinions and your good ears. when the song is finished i will post the whole thing and until then i will remix the short version till i get it wright. thanks guys tim pate

Flash, listening now. Pretty original. I think I would have panned the strings all the way left and right. That's my only thought. Good job.

Nice writing,I liked the chording.
Only things I heard was some distortion in the backround instruments.

I noticed the mp3 is only 1.1 megs.
Mabey encoding at a higher rate would help.
What encoder are you using?

Good start!

Best to you,
Pete

Hey Tim:

You asked a bunch of stuff about which I no very little. I can set up my rig in a bar, and I can belt out Hi "harmonies" and off beat git licks until 3 in the morning...these are things I'm good at. When it comes to recording...I'm a newbie. However, I used cakewalk for a little while, and if I learned anything, it's that the presets in music software are programmed by monkeys with A.D.D...who are probably smoking crack.

When I record an acoustic guitar, I record it totally dry, then I have to yank all the lows out of it with eq because it's a boomy S.O.B. Then I boost the crap outta' the highs...then, just in case, I yank a bunch of mids out of it too.

I compress each track as I go, and I don't think I've ever applied compression to an entire mix...although I know most people do - The stuff I record is really basic stuff...point is, I can't help you much in that department. Maybe somebody who knows something will lend an ear (and an eye) to help you along.

good luck,
-chris

Wow, that was really short ...

This sounds like you may be able to build it up into something interesting...

The reverb still seemed a little heavy to me, but not as distracting as on the last tune of yours I listened to.

Not a bad start. Will be interesting to see where you take this.

fairly dark side, moody stuff....with crispy guitar on top of it. The background acoutics almost sound like a drone effect. Is that what you want?

sounds like a start (to sumpin')

hi all, sorry i havnt written much lately ive been working so much lately. thanks so much for all your coments. just to clear this all up it is so short because its just a piece of a project that im working on. i posted it so my friends could have a listen and so i could have a good idea what i need to change before i do the full length one. mix im not sure what you mean by a drone sound but i do know im not very happy with the sound i gott. and im not sure how to change it to sound wright. my pickup in my acoustic is very powerful. i gonna try and double track it the rythm part anyway. on the short version i used the tape sim to try and get a bit of a analog sound. not sure that that wasnt a mistake.i realize some of you are hesitant to remark o the mix because the song is so short but just so you understand that is why i posted a short one to get some kinda ideas on how this song will sound good in full version.so any thing you can add would be superb. thanks guys. you guys are great.and this is the greatest site on the web. thanks a million tim pate
