OK I have been researching for about 3 months now and decided to lay down some serious cash (well plastic). Here is what I got, I have one desktop PC and a laptop PC but wanted to get a new one and get rid of the old pc or use it for something else so I bought a new pc: pentium 4, 2.4ghz, 512mb Ram, 120gig HD, dual 15" flat screens, and running XP. I already have Sonar, sound forge 5.0, pro audio 9, and an old version of guitar studio. I got a Motu 828 firewire interface, but wanted 8 more inputs so here is what I did (not sure if this is right though) I got a Alesis AI-3 which is just there analog to adat optical converter, and then ran the lightpipe into the Motu 828. So I should now have 16 inputs right? I already have an Alesis 32 studio console/mixer so I will be using this to hook everything up. I wont get the PC untill this weekend so I have not tried this set-up out yet, but does it sound like I am heading the right way!
thanks in advance.

Sounds good!
You made no mention of any mic's or monitors. What, if any do you have of the aforementioned!!??

Right now I dont have any monitors, can't afford them as of right now so I am going to use headphones for now. As for mics I personally have only a sm-57, 58, and a cheap AT mic. But my next purchase along w/ monitors will be a C1 mic from studio projects. thanks for the reply
