Your timing is off quite a bit in all of the songs especially the slow song. You need to get a better group of soundfonts or whatever you are using, it sounds very manufactured......What program are you using? I like your concept, but I don't like the final product. Are you feeling it yourself? That is the question! Don't settle for something acceptable, you want every song to be a banger... (To you anyway)
 
Im using FL studio 6, I often have trouble picking sounds. Do you have any advice as to how my timing can improve?
 
First of all, you're in the right place! I am not that sure how you can go about improving your timing if you can't identify it when you listen to the playback. I am glad you didnt take the criticism the wrong way, you have a good foundation to start with. There are many FL users here who can help you locating better sounding instruments, that has a direct affect on the overall sound of your project. Your creativity, and the notes you're playing, being in tune is just fine. Just your timing needs to be more accurate! (It'a like a milli or so off, but it is HUGE to someone with fresh ears) Wait and read as others post their opinions and advice. Good Luck!
 
It sounds like your getting better Noddy, I liked the intro to the first beat.
For timing, definitely use a metronome. As annoying as they are it's hard to go wrong using one. I've never used FL but I'm sure they have one.

A lot of hip-hop producers posted their drum samples there that you can download, I haven't heard them all but there's some pretty good ones in there you just kinda gotta weed out what you don't like. That should get you started with drums. Most are definitely better than a lot of the stock drums on any synth or software.

Try layering a few, sometimes that works out to give you a nice bangin kick.

That's a good suggestion for timing.................
But how are you doing your tracks? If you're laying your drums down first, and they are tight, then the Keys should fall in place. A Metronome helps normally when there is no percussion and you are just getting chords n stuff together. WEll, that is how I do it! But it can help you know that your drums are sequenced correctly as far as "On beat". But once that is layed, everything else should fall in place, I think!

I actually use the metronome to lay down my drums because I don't use midi at all really, or my workstations sequencer. I load up my drum samples in my Fantom and use the pads to bang out the drums all in audio into CEP/Audition.

Usually I start with a Kick using the metronome to get a good pattern, then the snare which is usually easy if it falls on 1:4, 2:4 etc... if anythings a split second off I'll just bump it into place using the time display in CEP. From there I turn the metronome off and do whatever's next.

If I do my HH's first though, I don't need a metronome. I'll just match the tempo on my Fantom and set the hats to roll at 1/16 and just visually put them in place, loop and go from there.
 
Use a metronome to lay the drums. But, you also sometimes don't want to over quantize. I even will sometime move notes forward or back a little to get a natural feel. Not much just a little. And quantizing 100% makes your production robotic.

The part I found really of was the synth in the hook parts. Is this a loop? That could be the problem... Did you quantize?

I'm not a FL studio 6 expert. More Reason 3.0. But, it's the same thing...
 
I'm a hardcore fl user and i know wut the problem is. You had the melody going in your head or you were playing it and you layed it down but the melody is too fast for the drums. In fl everything you create is loops. I've done this plenty of times, and the problem wit this beat is that your melody is too fast for your drums which means you have 2 options. you can keep the melody at the same tempo and put the melody on a new pattern and make your drums to that melody so they flow smoothly or you can keep the drums and remake the melody on a new pattern that already has the drums on it you follow me? If you choose option 2 you will have to shorten the length of the notes in the melody but you can add reverb to the instrument to make it sound like it's actually playin as long as it would be regularly, doing this will shorten the amount of bars used for the melody and will not make it start so quickly and you will be rid of the feeling that the melody is jumping ahead of the drums cuz that is wut i'm getting outta that, overall it will be a descent beat when all is running smoothly. also if you purchased fl and have a username and password for the website you can download about 2gigs of sampled sounds from the fl website. Peace

Simple just keep at it and dont give up trust me i went through the same thing homie..work hard and you'll get better 4sho

also check out some beat videos on youtube.com those helped me so much
