Pro Tools M-Powered Minimum Requirements (From off the Digi web site)

Total System RAM

768MB minimum required for Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 - More Recommended

Minimum Requirements (Windows XP):
Intel Pentium IV or Athlon processor, 1 GHz or higher
384 MB of RAM
Windows XP Home or Professional, Service Pack 2
Display resolution 1024 x 768 or higher
Free USB port for iLok USB Smart Key

n for tha other dude, i got an audiophile 2496 for the soundcard...

what's BFD?

i wish people would take the time to actually type the names of programs..

also what is DP?

In my experences, 512 has not been enough on my amd athlon 2.19ghz processor. Now it was fine most of the time, only when i got into alot of automation stuff where it became an issue. The simple way to get around that is to just bounce your track and that will take alot of stress of everything. But it was a pain. I upgraded to 2 gigs which is probably overkill but i have yet to run into anything that has made my computer noticeably slower, much less have any major issues. I'd say a gig would be minimum but you should be good with that, from my experences.

I do find it alot to do with what you are using though. For tracking, editing, mixing, my computer had no trouble out the box. When it came to using programs like reason, especially rewired into Protools while synced to my mpc, then i had issues. That might be a bit extreme for people though in their own processes.

Northen Cali,

I don't know what MF is.....

....but I got my info right from Digi.

You seen the URL I posted.... http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&langid=100&categoryid=35&itemid=24369

I'm having trouble believing people are wondering if they should boost their ram to the maximum or not.

Some people here have bought cables for more money than that.

My rack mount powerbar in my small home studio cost double that !!!

JUST GO GET THE RAM

Yup, one thing i was thinking. But people have their own budgets. I have always had the mentality that i will expand, improve, etc, any peice of gear i have that is very valuable to me. My computer being the most import peice of gear i have with my current set up.

That said, i've used a similar machine to mine with 1 gig of ram (specs are in previous post but basically 2.19ghz amd athalon/2 gigs of ram) with no real noticeable difference. But the jump from 512 to a gig was defineatly noticeable. 2 gigs was still worth the money to me though, i don't feel like i'm missing out, etc.

I've had 2 GB for so long now, that I just can't imagine things any other way.

My CPU isn't great though........ and that's where BFD kills me.

I thought my cpu was god send when i got my comp about a year ago. Now i feel like it's fine but not great. It's hard to stay ahead of the curve. I don't really have any issues but i see my cpu more taxed than it used to be as my software set up grows. On the good side, i don't have a standalone machine, i have not optimised it and it still does fine.

That's a big difference too. Having a dedicated machine. I'm sure i have spyware right now. I have like 66 running process, etc. Not optimised for audio because it is my everyday comp, i need that. With a dedicated machine for audio, i'm sure i could get away with alot less. Another thing to factor in to the equation.

I've always been a PC guy.... but If I ever go to a truly dedicated "Sound Recording ONLY" dedicated machine...... it's gonna be a MAC for about $1200. No Internet on it. No other apps, just Pro Tools, Garage Band, Logix, or whatever I settle on for a recording software.

BTW....

Best tools for spyware....

Spybot Search and Destroy

I use 3 of those, i guess my main thing, it's not a concern if you are a bit overkill. I don't need to run them all the time, even if i have something bad and i know it hasn't been caught yet (the spyware always comes before the fix), it's not an issue. That's my point i guess. Sure i could get away with a pentium 3 and 512 ram if i set it up right (i think) but i don't have to deal with that. I can talk on aim if i need a break, check my e-mail, and go on car forums while still playing around or listening to a loop i just made or when i'm mixing vocals to my beats (poorly :D )

I guess my point is, you have to cater your system to how you work. I think that's why alot of people here can get away with far less than i need. I think i could get my running processes down to about, well, quick check, almost nothing. With all i have going, internet free, i think i have about 5ish at a glance. So anyone building a computer need to take that into account.
