I listened to Blackjack:
So, I'm getting all warm and cozy, listening to the Wes Montgomery-esqe rhythm guitar. Then you go and wake my ass up "Ah yeah... check this out..." followed by a wild synth. Then, back to warm and cozy. Oh shit, where'd that lead guitar come from?

Great stuff. I'm not sure you're gonna get much help here. You're already there if you ask me. Maybe the heavyweights will have something to say...

What's that stuff I hear in the background? (Can't make it out on the PC speakers.)

Yeah, that's some great stuff there.

IMHO:

Drums sound really bright. Don't know what to suggest, other than dropping some of the high end from the cymbals, or lowering the cymbals altogether. Weird room, feels "off" of the other instruments.

Those snaps on Blackjack sound a bit off, too. I'd like to hear them mic'ed closer, but with more 'verb on 'em. A warm verb, yeah?

After Today reinforces the weird drum thing. There's a weird reflection from your room, I think. You're stereo overhead-ing with an added kick mic, right? Try treating the immediate surrounding of the drums with foam or carpet and getting your drummer to hit his toms/snare a bit harder. Or maybe screwing his cymbals down tighter, dunno. Not a drummer, :D.

Sounds GREAT overall. Good to hear a change of pace from the usual!

Impressive!

I listened to all four songs, -hi-fi. I like the songs. The production is very professional,- to my novice ears.

Can you give some of the basic recording details, specifically I am interested in the clean guitar and Bass recordings....

miked amps or DI box...what kind? pre-processors and effects, compression and how much?

Computer recording or studio?

...just trying to set my compass?

Great work!

Thanks!
Beleive it or not, this is a very rough mix of our songs..total tracking time was a week and we wrote two of the songs (blackjack 21 and After Today) while recording them. I used a P III 450, with a Behringer MX802a with SB Live Value.

Drums were recorded first with a 57 on kick, 57 on snare, and one Apex 190 for overhead. Then bass was recorded direct through the 802A. I didn't get around to miking guitar cabs so I just ran direct. I put a little cakewalk reverb on the guitars...i used little or no compression on anything. Just a little on the overal mix to tame levels. The keyboards were run direct in the board, and i used some directx plug ins on it.

For two of the tracks i ran the guitar through an RP2000. I think i went overboard with bass though, it seems a little to overpowering sometimes.

Other than that, it way was pretty basic, but thats my style when it comes to recording.

The hardest part of this whole project was producing it, playing on it, arranging it, and recording it. I dont know if i can handle doin all the shit again! It was also a 16 bit recording, i could have done ALOT better with 24 bit!!! but i cant afford it!!

In response to Kelly, yea the drums were recorded in a shitty basement and I know EXACTLY what your talking about...im gonna try to giver er' a fixin.

Poo,

In some respects I was hoping that you were using,
24/96 sampling
mikes everywhere!...fore and aft of the guitar cabs
plenty of processing in the signal chain,

but alas no, like so many of us, you're living in the 16 bit world, with a 57 and a $100 sound card!

Man, my material sounds like S**t compared to your material!
...and so I''l be going now ..Ah, back to the beginners forum

....say, I think I'm interested in this new digital recording thing...

but I have a question,

I can't find the S/PDIF input on my old KLH 386 16MHz with 4megs RAM...so

should I upgrade the soundcard or just go for a 486?

Livin' with shitty equipment means use as less EQ as possible! That's what works best for me! Also, the best way to make good recordings (in my opinion) is to listen to good recordings and to try to imitate your favorite sound(s). And you don't have to worry about mic placement if you have no mics to place!!!!

poo,

THat was some awesome production.I was highly impressed with it. I was even more impressed when I saw your gear list. You used it to 100% of quality capacity.

I also like the tune. Very proffesional in all aspects.

keep it up.

Thanks! I just hope I can do it again :-) j/k!
If there is one thing I want for XMAS is a 24 bit/96 Khz system...
