Hey, I just finished working on this, and aside from a few tweaks, I feel like I'm done with it. The band is happy with it so far, but I want to see what you guys would change with it, what it needs, what it has too much of.
I'll give a rundown real quick...
Band is called One Fine Line, from Lexington, Ky, medium-rock, and they drove all the way to Louisville about 6 times now just to record with me, I feel honored. Great guys.

www.nowhereradio.com/demoking/singles 2nd one on the list i think, Under Your Skin

Orange County drum kit, tuned well with new heads, made a huge difference. I really like that kit, but the vented snare was hard to work with.

drum OH: C4's
toms: E609's, floor MD421
snare MD-441 (snare too loud?)
Kick E609 backed up with a DFH trig

Bass: Warwick direct into RNP

guitars Peavey Ultra head w/ Sheffield cabinet, MD-441 about a foot out from the cab, added nothing but a bit of high shelf around 16k and maybe a db of 2k (so shoot me, fuck it)

Vocals: verses MD441, chorus and backing vocals, U195, a hair of high shelf around 14K, I think they need a tad bit of de-essing for sure.

acoustic guitars: C4 about a foot out.

Reverb I used on almost every track to give it all some mesh, even overheads. I used Waves Verb, on a preset called Studio A, a really good sounding room verb. I like it enough that I dont mess with the parameters on it.
It could use more space (as in trimming freqs) around the instruments, but its a very full mix I think. I will do some tweaks and try your ideas to it sunday, so make some suggestions and I'll try them out.

Are the acoustic guitars after the solo loud enough? One thing I do know, is the reverb in the distorted vocal right after the acoustic guitar part is way too lush (Sonic Timeworks 4080L cathedral setting) so that will have to be backed off some.
Mp3 messed up my hats and cymbals a little.

Just had a quick listen & that sounds pretty sweet tubedude.
I've got limited ability & equipment but here are my comments anyway!

Yep, vocals need a little de-essing.

Kit sounds great. The snare - I'd like to fatten it up a little if possible but the actual level sounds spot on to me.

I think the vocal gets a little lost when the first guitar 'stabs' come in (around 51 secs). I'm not sure if the vocal level is too low or the guitar too high.

The acoustic part - it seems a little low but I really like the way it interacts with the percusion & it gives a more dramatic effect when the full mix comes back in. Very nice:)

The distorted vox part - more of a creative call than a mixing decision but I'd like to hear it as more of a 'telephone line' sound with just a hint of distortion. No lows, no highs, narrow boost about the middle (1k?), compressed to hell & maybe the old 'reversed reverb' trick thrown on for good measure - this would let it stay wet but you'de get a beat of absolute silence before WHAM the full mix is right on top of you!

Hope these points come across in the spirit they were intended - it's a very nice recording.

Mix sounds pretty good so far. To me, the vocals have to come up quite a bit. Either compress the nuggies out of them, or whatever to make them really there. I find that to be a flaw in almost all the stuff I hear as compared to something more "commercially" done. At any volume, the vocals are there(on a "pro" recording)...no matter what style. And bring that tinny solo up too..as loud as a vocal... and ditch the tinny sound :p

Gotta comment on some Ky boys!

mix sounds great!
drums/vocals/guitars = really good.

If it were me, I would work on the bass a bit. there's not much definition in it. sounds really muffled. of course... thats a matter of taste and if the artist wants it that way then... what can you do?
the only other thing that i would work on is the hi-hat. the closed hi hat has what i would call an annoying tick to it. i'm sure it could be EQd out.

but overall, awesome job.

Thanks bros...
That tinny guitar solo, he has the wah open on, and I think there isnt much I can do about that. You know how those will scream that upper mid and highs.

I think the snare might be a tad loud personally, and the vocals are iffy, sometimes I like em where they are, other times I want them louder. I can never decide firmly.

I think Ky is on the level when it comes to bands. I have a lot of bands come through that are really good. And of course, we had Flaw and Outspoken roll out of Louisville in the last 3 years if you like that kind of music. The Outspoken album is just a plain great rock album. It should have done so much better. CHeck it out.

Vocals need to come up, IMO.

Yeah, seems to be the consensus. I'm going to turn them up a hair, but I want them to be a part of the mix, not too far forward.

Thanks.

The bass sounds weird to me, kinda too tight ro something. I dunno, it's just strange, in the heavy guitar parts it seems too quiet and lacking and in the quieter passages it seems too all over sonically. There are spots where it pokes out and eats the mix.

The snare doesn't seem like it's cracking the way it wants to.

Good sound though, I hesitate to comment on this from a pair of headphones.

Tubedude,
I'm always impressed by what I hear you doing. I've been to your website and I can see why the sounds are great. You've got some great gear and you apparently know how to use it. My only affiliation with the louisville music scene is Mom's Music. I love that store and the guys in there are pretty cool to me even when I don't buy anything. You know any of them?

I'm selling out and shutting down for a little while and I have a band that I think could benefit from your expertise. I will tell them to contact you if they want to keep recording. Keep up the good work.

Chris

the bass sounds strange in some spots.. not just boomy and muddy.. some weird notes and/or intonation problems.. guitar sounds good.. these guys sound like creed..

Frank from Outspoken just mentioned the bass thing too. I think its not real tight with the drums. I could have him retrack it in a few minutes and get it tighter. Maybe thats the problem. He said it was like they werent listening to each other. Might be out of my control though. I'll check it out.
