cheapest way

i have a pre amp with an s/pdif and aes/ebu, what is the cheapest way for me to get this thing plugged in and running so i can record, am i going to need an interface and a converter or is there a cheaper way? i ask this because my computer only has usb inputs and the other basics
 
Cheapest way..check your computer, you may not need to spend a thing. Does your computer have a sound input at all? If so what are the inputs? does it have a SPDIF input? Most soundblasters do if I am not mistaken. If not no worries, just use the line out of your pre and go into the line in on your soundchip/card.

That's cheap for ya.

Otherwise there's a box you can buy at office depot that is a USB soundblaster thingie. It has SPDIF inputs for $39. I used one for a while to buss things from my digital mixer into a family computer, worked ok.

Yo ESP! You're posting all over in a panic state here. The question is- What kind of sound card is in your computer??? If you don't have a soundcard, you are going to need one. If you do, it's got some kind of line in. Line out from VAMP to line in on soundcard. And because you are asking questions in other threads that show you are confused, MIDI is not a system for transferring music. It is a format for transferring commands about what to do with music. You can connect by USB or firewire if you have the appropriate interface. For instance- guitar > VAMP > M Audio mobilepre > USB > to computer. That would work, but for the same amount of money, you can just get a decent sound card, which will do more, in many ways. And- as has been pointed out above, your current computer has almost certainly got a sound card in it (probably a fairly cruddy one), and somewhere that sound card has a line level input. Find it, and use it. If you don't like the sound, start saving for a real soundcard.-Richie
 
But if he can go SPDIF in the soundcard quality is a non issue.
 
Correct, Jake. Then the issue is the cruddy A-D conversion of a Behringer VAMP Pro, which I am all too familiar with. I would waaay prefer the conversion be done by the sound card, or a TC Electronics M300, or a flying cow, or *anything* else.-Richie
 
i have a line in on my sound card its just a standard one that came with my asus gigabyte mother board. what type of cable would i use to connect this to my v amp pro? Is the line in an rca connector?
 
Line-out of the vamp to the line-in of the soundcard.
Use adapters from Radio Shack if the connector shape is different-- doesn't matter if it's RCA, 1/8" or 1/4" it's just two wires and a connector shell.

If you want to use S/PDIF, you'll need a soundcard with S/PDIF inputs.
Echo Mia is excellent; I used to use a Johnson J-Station with a Mia via S/PDIF and the recording quality was fantastic as the digital input is very, very, very quiet.
