What is the cheapest form of setting up a pro tools studio without thier hard ware, or minimal hardware?

24ch.

you mean you need 24 inputs?

well, the Digi 002rack in addition with ADAT pre amps will give you 18. If you want more, I'm afraid you need a TDM system...

how are there 18??

how do i use the extra 2!!??

Is it the alt/src's?

I tried that and couldnt get it to work...

Can you break down how to hook those up.

This could make my life easier

Thanx brett

8 analog inputs
+8 ADAT optical ins
+2 S/PIDF
--------------------
18ins

I think the AltSource inputs that you're refering to are RCA and just take over the 7/8 ins....so if you have an RCA device to hook up you can do so without having to buy or make an RCA to 1/4" cable. Same with the ALT Main out....except they go to speakers with RCA.

and yeah, if you're constantly needing to record 24 channels at once, it might be wise to get an HD unit. but if you dont' want to spend the money, think about if you REALLY need to record 24 at once or if you can get away with doing like 12 at once, 4 later, and so on.

well i wanted a MIXING BOARD with actual 24 inputs, so i can easily add and subtract inputs as well as have the IMAGE of a larger studio.

I'm looking for a productive pro tools inviorment as well as the "WOW" look and effect.

Please advise. Thanks guys, your help is greatly appreciated!

so you want to get a protools 24 channel setup for the looks?

24 channels is a lot and it'll cost you anyway you slice it, especially with the limited choices you ahve with protools hardware.

My thinking was that...

I could purchase a mbox or digi001 and then connect 1 input into a MACKIE 24ch mixer.

From thier I can control all 24 ch. but then again it will not be on different tracks, I soppose.

:/

Im new to these things.

new to these things? oh i thought you were a veteren pro tools user. Well in that case, if you choose to a route other than pro tools, there are many more options available.
You could get your 24 channel mixer and run the outputs into a couple of delta 1010LT's. probably a cheaper solution than getting a couple of digi002's.

so you're trying to take 24 tracks and sum them down into one stereo track in pro tools using something like an mbox? that definitely would be a waste of money on the pro tools system. one of the beneifts of having a DAW being able to have separate tracks and therefore separate control over each sound. if you recorded 24 channels to a stereo track every time you did a session you'd be wasting a lot of valuable pro tools features, and therefore I'd have to say stay away from it. There are much more cheaper ways to do what you want to do. you can get N-track studio and an m-audio device for much cheaper and still have your "wow" factor of the mixer.
