Cheap Soundcard

Hi all,

Here's the deal. Which soundcard should I get. I have a USB midi edirol pcr30 keyboard and am playing with softsynths. I am playing around with Acid/Ableton Live and am just starting out.
I currently have a SB Live and it's a POS when it comes to midi. I am getting a delay.
I am not a serious musician I just need something with NO midi delay and yet be able to play games.
Should I go with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, MAudio Revolution 7.1 or something else.
What do you think?
 
I think the M-Audio Audiophile would be right up your alley.
 
if you are getting a delay with midi, there may be other issues besides the soundcard.....i think one of the things SB's are good for is its midi and soundfont capabilities......
 
Gidge, he is talking about using softsynths not soundfonts. The soundblaster live with its standard drivers has pretty high latency.

Djcruz, if you dont want to spend anymore money try using the kx project drivers for the sblive (or APSlive drivers for win98se). They will reduce your latency to usable levels.

Hi all,

I tried those drivers and still had same problem. I have a 1.4ghz, 512MB RAM, 7200 RPM HD, WindowsXP Pro, ATI 7200 Radeon. Everything I have seen seems to point to SBLive not being the right card for softsynths. So if I have to invest in another card which way would you go. I want a cheap card just to get by with for now.
 
I am no expert on the KX project drivers but if you have them installed successfully you should be able to run your softsynths with Asio drivers and get latency well below 10ms which means no lag. Did you adjust the buffer size in the Asio settings to reduce latency?

Otherwise get a pro audio card like the Mia, audiophile, EWX24/96, 6fire with low latency asio drivers. Do not get the audigy2, santa cruz, revolution.
 
I had an audigy before I bough my delta 1010lt and you can't belive how many times I beat myself up for not buying at least an audiophile. Do not buy a Soundblaster Live if you're serious about recording and don't not count on the KX-driver! They may work or they may not, but I have lots of friends that only gets crackles and pops with these drivers.

I think it's really worth it to get the audiophile.
