Hey, i'm n00b to this forum but I thought it would be the best place to ask.

Long story short my band wants to record our demo and doesnt want to pay for studio time, every thing is set exept for micing the drums at home, is there a way i can mic each partof the kit, have all those leads come into something where i can change the volume of all the parts of the kit so everything has the right proprtion of volume and then have it into one lead where i can just plug it into the computers line in.

im sorry if this was covered before but any help is appreciated.

thanks

Unless I misunderstood, sounds like you want a mixer.

You plug all the mics that you'll use into the mixer. Plug the mixer stereo output to your Line In. Adjust the volume/panning for each mic (drum) on the mixer and record to a stereo track from the Line In.

The best way though is having an interface (soundcard) that has an input for each microphone (you will also need a preamp channel for each mic). Then you can record them onto separate tracks and mix/re-mix them as you need to.

If you go the mixer route, once they're recorded onto a stereo track they can't be remixed and you'd have to retrack if you wanted to change anything.

No offense dirth, but if you don't even know what a mixer is, you are probably a couple of years and LOTS of money in recording gear away from getting a recording that won't embarass you.

You might be better off just finding a friend of a friend who has a home studio or small studio and try to get a good deal. Once you start down this road, it is a big commitment. Think of it like learning new instrument. Imagine if you had to put off recording your CD until you learned how to play a new instrument that you don't know, and at a professional level.

That's what you are looking at...

Google alesis multimix firewire 8.
It might be what you are after :)

amra: none taken dude, but im not as far as u think lol i know wat a mixer is, and what im reffering to was similar but what i wanted was much more compact and doesnt have all the other effects just volume, ive seen one of my friends use one for plugging about 3-4 guirars into one amp, but i dont see him any more so i cant really ask him to borrow it or to find out were to get one.

hmm...if you only have dynamic mics, and have xlr to mono trs cables...you may be thinking of something like...

but..if you want something not so crappy you could get something like...

http://www.andysmusiconline.com/products/yamaha-mg102c-mixer.html

it has phantom to power condenser mics...you can get regular xlr mic cables...

only thing is when you plug in to the line in, all your tracks go into an analog stereo...and get recorded as two tracks.

i did that for years though, and just set my pans and volumes. takes a few takes to get the balance, but that's a helpful thing in the long run.

bad thing is...its 150, and for a bit more, you can get the firewire (assuming you have the port) and can learn a bit more about eq and multitracking.
