Cheap monitor isolation pads..??

I was going to use the money I have to buy some Auralex MoPAD iso pads for my new monitors, but.....

I need an external HD to track to as my computer HD is filling up quickly!

I decided to put that money toward an external HD, my question is, what is a quick and cheap solution for some monitor isolation pads that are going to be on my desktop...

Would a folded towel under each monitor do the trick??

I use those pink pencil erasers. 4 per monitor, one under each corner. the whole setup cost about 2 bucks. the dense rubber provides some isolation and I always have an eraser handy for re writes.

Bristol- thats a pretty damn good idea! Nice call! You talking about the ones that are rectangular shaped? And they provide decent isolation from your desk? The speaker never falls off the erasers? Man thats a good idea!

Exactly the rectangular ones. With one under each corner of each monitor, the speakers are totally stable and yes they give me reasonable isolation. Not perfect but for 2 bucks in a home setup, for my happy dappy stuff good enough is good enough.

yeah lyrics chord progressions that kind of stuff, you can never have too many erasers when you're working on a song :)

Great idea there! As for the re writes, I should start writing down my chord progressions...... It hasnt happened yet, but I have a feeling I may forget how to play some of my songs down the road :eek:

A simple, quick solution is to get a couple of the old-style mouse pads...the ones made of dense foam. :)

I went a little more involved and got a roll of some super-dense, bed matt foam...the stuff people use under their sleeping bags for camping...it’s a good ½” thick.
I then cut two squares for each monitor, and then made a "sandwich" using 1 foam square, (1) one-inch square of marble (got some for free, cut to size), then another foam square.
The decoupling is exceptional with the foam/marble/foam.

If you go to my website and look at the studio pics…you can just make out “sandwiches”….I used them under both sets of monitors.

You don't need to use marble, I think even a typical stone floor tile will work, and you can get them cut to size at Home Depot.
 
Under each of my Haflers I have an acoustic ceiling tile on the bottom, then about one inch of styrofoam, topped with another acoustic ceiling tile. The Haflers would crush pencil erasers, way too heavy.
 
A couple of road kill raccoons and I'm all set! :laughings:
Actually the foam that comes in the box when you purchase a new microphone works well if you saved them.

I won a set of Aurelux monitor pads in a contest. I use them and I think they work fine. But I suspect any of the solutions offered here would work just about as well. I'd recommend you save your money.
 
i found two desk organisers with around half an inch of rubber on the bottom...so ive filled them with modelling clay and turned them upside down...they make pretty sturdy speaker stands for $10 a pair :)

I actually found a set of really nice speaker stands used and am picking them up tomorrow. Got em for 30 bucks!

This is the best solution for me because now I free up a LOT of space on my desk and the wife doesnt want to kill me anymore for turning the office into a recording studio :-)

I still may put some of the foam moresound was talking about underneath, but I'll do that when I buy a new mic...

Gotta stop spending for a while :-)

Just wanted to say thanks to all the helpful & useful comments in this thread.
You guys just saved me a packet.

I'll try the erasers or mousemat methods first because they're the quickest & simplest.
I'll be purchasing the Samson MS 200 this week as my speaker stands. They'll do for my 1st stands as they're cheap & come as a pair.

(Sorry I can't post links yet because of the forums 10 post or more rule) so google..

Also in his video he uses shock proof isolation pads (little squares of rubber) as an alternative to expensive foam shock absorption. I googled them but couldn't find the exact product he'd used but I came across an alternative which looks promising.. "Square Shape Silicon Gel Sticky Pads" sold on the website Everything China. I've emailed them regarding price (they apparently sell in bulk) I'll post back to thread how it all works out & on the materials I use. :thumbs up:
 
Talking about these with a friend in the audio business who whole-heartedly agreed the Auralex pads are way overpriced.

I used to work at a rubber molding-and-extruding company and had a bunch of small pieces that I use combined with a some folded-over thin sheets of neoprene sponge.
