1. For Behringer mixers, what's different between the MX and UB lines?

The UB mixers suck, the MX mixers suck more :D
Seriously, the UB has they're new IMP preamps, which are quieter and cleaner. The UB's actually sound pretty good and out of the box it's well worth the asking price. However my problem with Behri mixers are that they have a short life expectancy, and often a long drawn out death of things crapping out on a weekly basis until they finally refuse to turn on. Their customer service sucks, so if it breaks you might as well throw it away.

Just got the MG10/2 today, thank my wife. Now I gotta split before she catches me on here!

Behringer engineers are too stupid to design mixers with an on/off switch. To turn the thing on you plug it in, to turn it off you have to unplug it--it can be a nuisance when the outlet is behind a piece of furniture or in the floor.

Mackie

Probably burn in hell for this :p

A small Mackie would be good like a VLZ 1202 costs more but better then the others IMO

I would not go any lower then a VLZ 1642.

I'm going to try a phonic helix FW 18 firewire Mk 2 (mark 2) .

They are JUST coming out in the U.S. & Canada .

It seems to meet al of my needs and some .
Also the reviews are pretty good .

Speeddemon, I have an opportunity to get my hands on a used soundcraft spirit SX. Are these mixer noisier than Behringer? I've heard some not so good things about the noise level in Behringers mixers, and that makes me feel uncomfortable about the SX.

I don't have a chance to hear it, but it's in mint condition and I would get full warranty even though it's used. Do you think I should look for another mixer because of the noise level in this one? The price and features are just what I've been looking for.

I have a spirit sx. I don't think it's all that noisey. The pres and eq are usable for tracking. The master and monitor section are not as clean as the Mackie 1402 I used to have. And I just prefer the way the monitor section is laid out on the mackie. I cringe a little when ever I sum anything through the sx. Just using the pres it's fine though, and i do like the eq, i've actually used it while tracking. My direct outs are getting flakey (I bought mine in not so stellar condition) I really wouldn't want to haul the spirt board around to gigs. It feels flimsy compared to a Mackie, or a A&H.

starting at post #8 this thread started going for mixers over $100 bucks...lets bring it back down to where its supposed to be. the MX is the older model for which mackie sued behringer over. the UB series is a better selection but the MG 10/2 would be the selection of choice for quiet, clean pres (quality). the UB1202 would be my choice in that price range if i was going for inputs and outputs (quantity). you can also check out www.americanmusical.com

jeezus...god knows my tune has changed.

I rarely use my yamaha mg 12/4 for vocals but i like it so much better than my little ub802 i picked up accouple years ago. It sounds better but it's not just that. My ub802 would have so many intermitant problems. One of the stereo channels would just loose the left side every now and then. It would periodically just get noisy and i'd unplug it, back to normal. Finally, my moniters would just start to distort over a certain volume.

I always say this. Soundquality aside, there are so many other reasons i stay away from behringer.

I use a mg16/4 for radio remote's. I have had good luck with it. The yamaha's are good workhorses.

I have the yamaha mg 8/2 fx (identical to the 10/2 but with fx instead of the last stereo inputs). I use if for recording and small gigs and it works great for both.

soundcraft compact 10

i love this thing. great, great mixer for the money.
like a studio swiss army knife.
4 mono channels with inserts
4 stereo channels with 1/4" trs or rca
2 rcs channels with riaa eq for turntables.
monitor out, stereo out, two headphone outs.
the mono channels have either low-cut or a DI and phantom power.
the DI advertises that it matches impedence of the incoming signal, which seems to be true, because i've never had it freak out on me and i've run everything through it. the channels are nice and clean sounding...the eq is musical though limited (3 band fixed). but i use this thing all the time.
it is imho...the best cheap mixer ever. :D

I used my UB1202 for a couple of years before going mixerless with an EMU 1820M and going in for vox and bass via ART MPA Gold and PRO VLA. The pre's are quite usable, no matter what anyone says and I never really had any problems with it. Wouldn't use it for summing but worked fine for what I needed it for.

Well, I haven't heard the Xenyx preamps in the new Behringer Xenyx mixer series, but if you're considering their UB series, it might be worth checking into. They're supposed to be clones of the Mackie Onyx series, which seem to be getting pretty high marks. Here's one with the features you're looking for and in your price range :

FWIW.

I have just brought the soundcraft compact 4 mixer for £69 . Have'nt yet used it but there does'nt seem to be any aux/ send returns but there must be a way i can connect my lexicon <MX200.
