I have seen some dirt cheap MIDI controller keyboards on ebay.
I am not a keyboard player, just lookin for something to use to controll my SB synth and record in N-track (I mainly record guitar and Bass). Is there any reason I shouldn't pick up just any midi controller/keyboard? BTW - I am very new to the world of MIDI so be gentle!

Little keys really suck, so try for full sized keys. Also weighted keys are nice but usually more pricey. Oh, and I think velocity sensitivity is an absolute must. Otherwise all your MIDI note volumes are the same and you have to do a bunch of editing to get it to have something approaching natural dynamics.

Agree with everything Alchuck said. I'd recommend the Evolution MK249c, which is on and off of Ebay, for about $180US. It's velocity sensitive, has 49 keys, mod wheel, and 12 assingable knobs for teaking, which is ultra cool IMO and verrrry useful once you learn the joys of synths.
