hi, newbie to recording..

is it ok if i just buy a few bucks cheap karaoke mike and linein to my sound card? (i'm computer recording)..

and if to choose.. dynamic or condenser?.. i read and know that condenser maybe louder? but.. actualli.. which produce better quality?

You need to buy a microphone and a preamplifier. You hook the mic to the preamp, and the preamp to the line in of your soundcard.

Go here and read:http://www.hr-faq.org/

Then come back and ask questions.

Yes, that should be fine. A little practice and you should be able to belt it out like Michael and Janet combined. :)

gordon. about the cheapest way to record, for just over a hundred bucks.
would be to get a cheap dynamic mic and plug it into something like
an audiobuddy mic pre. far better than the kar idea.
or if you want really really cheap, plug a dynamic mic (with an adaptor)
into a cassette deck mic input, then line output of cassette deck to line in of sound card. always use line in of sound card.
in fact once forlaughsi did a shootout test to fool some tek friends of mine.
plugged a shack pzm into a cassette deck and recorded to the pc then did the same with decent mic plus pre...and many who said they could tell the difference.. couldnt. but i cheated a bit. i cleaned up the track carefully using the cassette dek mic pre.
peace.

Hi Gordon,

There is one bottom line in your question.
It is made up of three things:

1. Recording for fun or for demos?
2. What is your maximum budget?
3. How high quality is your sound card (and what's it being run through?)

I'll try and give some input based on your answers,

Best,

CC

In a nutshell, a microphone preampamplifier is a booster... a preamp amplifies the low audio signal level of a mic up to a useable line level signal. Mic level - to - Line level. It's "pre" because the preamp is inserted before the receiving device (The Line Input in your case)... and it's "amp" (sort for amplify) because it's an amplifier (booster).
