What is the cheapest set of eight mic preamps that money can buy? Seriously, I am doing research that involves noise removal using a microphone array, and I'm using cheap microphones, so a little noise won't hurt. All the mic preamps solutions I've seen out there are pretty upwardly mobile... The Alesis studio 12R mixer seems to be about as cheap as it gets, but it's overkill. I'm just trying to run some electret mic elements into an 8-line sound card (gadgetlabs wave824) so i don't really need a mixer, just an (8X) mic preamp, and a battery box. I would go with two aardvark direct-pro's which have their own pre's but they're more expensive and take up two slots (and two IRQ's?). I don't really want to solder together eight little preamp circuits of my own...

Peavy maybe.... I don't know, I used a peavy board once.... wasn't very impressed.. just go down to a geetar shop and ask for mixers, then usually have fairly crappy ones there.
(least they do in my town)

I think the alesis is the one.
does the alesis 12R has direct outs?

what about ART preamps?
somebody says in a thread that he get it for $59 each.

rolls has a 6 mixer/preamp in a rack space!!! (XLR / 1/4)
(but it is ROLLS...)

if you want 8 tracks of 8 mics, at the same time, you will need 8 preamps, that a fact, mmmm... I think you will have to go with the alesis preamp, IF it has direct outs for the 8 channels. :(

CHECK OUT ALL THE ROLLS PRODUCTS, MAYBE YOU WANT THEM...
THEY ARE CHEAP, I HAVE NEVER TRY THEM...

SEARCH FOR ROLLS MIXERS AND ROLLS PREAMP.

the peaveys don't seem to have direct outs / channel inserts... still looking... same with rolls'
funny, the spec. on direct outs is often buried.

Best deal so far: Samson MPL has 12 preamped mic inputs, with 12 channel inserts. seems perfect for digital recording.

$349 from zzsounds,

$329 at http://www.advancedvideosystems.com/PriceFiles/SAMSON.asp

the runner up: Alesis Studio 12R is $349 by itself from zsounds,
$ 329 at savedbytech,
http://www.savedbytech.com/UPrice.htm#ALE-S12R
but is $300 from gadgetlabs when you buy their wave824 for $450. Has 8 preamped mic inputs, 8 direct outputs.
