I will soon be getting my first paycheck from my mind numbingly boring office job and want to selebrate by splashing out on my first Fender bass. At the website i will be using It has several jazz'es for 550ish and several for 770ish. These are both in my price range but with the extra money left over from the cheaper one I could buy a cheap paul Mcartney knockoff bass aswell or a new practise amp.

So is there really much difference between the 550 ones and the 7 70 ones?

550:http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=ie/fender_mexico_jazz_rw_awh_upgrade.htm

770:http://www.thomann.de/index.html?partner_id=97926&page=ie/fender_highway_one_jbass_rw_tw.htm

Oh and are there any brands that people would recommend to be better than fender for my jazz search?

Any advise appreciated :)

The cheaper one is made in Mexico, and the other is made in the U.S. by mexicans. :)

That's gonna be a hard choice without touching them. Some MIMs are excellent, some MIAs suck. (All MIJs are sweet)

Do you already have a bass? Do you already have an amp? What kind of music do you want to play?

IMHO:
MIM, MIA, Squire... Go for the bass that wins the blindfold test. If you can possibly do so, test drive the instrument first instead of getting one by mail order. This would be worth a few extra bucks because the quality control at Fender leaves something to be desired. After you have found one that feels great, play it through your amp or an amp as much like yours as possible. If you don't have an amp, play it through everything in the store.

An electric bass is the instrument plus the amp. If you manage to save any money by going with a MIM bass save the remaining duckies for a great amp instead of buying extra toys.

Whatever you do, write back and let us know how it went.

Good Luck
