This is very probably the dumbest question in history but.......

One of the little buttons beside each track in the multitrack view of CEPro gives you three options, it allows you to choose whether the corresponding track is left channel, right channel or stereo.

Two questions.

1: I assume that if I choose left channel or right channel the track will be a mono track. What is the difference between left and right then ? If you record a track on the left or right channel it seems to me to be balanced between the two speakers. Why not just have one option saying 'mono' ?

2: If I take a aux 'tape out' connection from my mixer into my soundcard(1/8th" jack), and my mixer has panning on some of the channels...does the track I'm recording in CEPro have to be defined as a stereo track as above for the panning to be realised in the recording ?

Thanks for trawling through that (messy) question, if you can help I'd appreciate it.

1.) Because a stereo signal is 2 channels. So while your picking your input from your soundcard, it wants to know which channel to record, or both(stereo).
Example:
If you had 2 mono tracks you wanted to record at the same time, you could pan one of them all the way left and the other right. Then set up 2 tracks to record, one left, one right. Each sound will record on its own track.

2.) If you are running the sound in stereo(2 channels) then the answer is yes. If you are only running one channel then no.

hmmmmmmmmmm,,,,

So would I be right in saying that both the left and right channels are the same as far as the ear is concerned, but the signal just gets routed through a different physical channel in the soundcard and thats the only difference ?

eclips1, could you elaborate on question 2 as I'm a little unclear. I phrased the question badly and as a result a yes/no answer doesn't really clear it up.

My fault,

I think......Stereo is 2 channels(left and right), mono is one channel and there is no left and right. The left and right option in cep is merley a choice between channels to record on.

Question 2....
If you run the sound in stereo, meaning you will have 2 1/8" plugs(one representing your left channel, the other your right) any panning you have done will be picked up in the recording. So if this is a mixture of sounds and some of them are panned, yes record the track in stereo to have the panning present. If you were to record it in mono, cep will only record the left or right signal. It will play the sound back in stereo but there will be no panning present(you will get the exact same sound out of the left and right).

I hope I made sense..... if not say so and I'll try again or I'm sure someone else can explain it better.
