Soundcraft 6000 - Alesis HD24:

Using the mic pres on the desk, of course set the channel input to MIC (button up), tweak level and send to HD24, no problem.

It's at playback where things become a pain: to listen to the recorded track, set to LINE (button down - easy), but I then have to reset the trim (to a lower level) to avoid overloading the input. It's a pain having to reset the trim all the time, and often ends up with level differences between takes on a given track.

Would the Soundcraft 's two internal -10/+4 switches be where I should be looking to remedy this problem?

My 'workaround' (if you can call it that) is to use a different channel strip's mic pre and route the output of that to the track to be recorded. I can then use the recorded track's usual channel strip to monitor without all the fiddling.

It would just seem like a more elegant solution to have one strip dealing with both rec and playback of a given track. Any other desk I've used has been this way. Where am I going wrong?

Sometimes inline boards can be a bitch. My old Allen heath was like that. So I ditched it and a got a tascam m3500 board that had a dual fader setup so i could return my recorders outputs and not be eq'ing everything all over again not to mention your trim problem. Two faders per channel strip was a god send for when I was using it for inline recording

Then I suppose I'm stuck with my 'workaround,' which in effect mimicks your 2 fader setup. Thank god mine's got the patchbay!
