I recently bought a 424 III and need to know if the machines a dud or its me being dumb.

Scenario. Ive recorded 3 guitar parts on 3 channels (1,2&3) via input 1 using the bus records and pan L/R as instructed in the manual (using tape cue to monitor).
When playing back the finished article with all 3 channels set to tape (using headphones) using faders to change vol. it sounds OK with all set at 7 and master at 7.
However, if channels 2 & 3 are set v.low ie 1 on fader and channel 1 is OFF completely I can still hear Ch. 1 v.faintly (or any similar combination). This is irritating if I want to fade something in. Also if all channels are OFF and I turn the headphone Vol. up to what would be earsplitting high I can hear all channels v. faintly. Lead guitar parts seem to be worst. Will this come out on master tape.
When recording, all my levels rarely peak at 3. I,m inputing from an effects unit with pre-amp.
I,d be greatful if anyone can help

If you are just recording 1 thing per track, it's much much easier to use Direct recording. The Portastudio manuels tell you to use bus, but if you just use Direct, you don't even have to make a cue mix.

Bus means path and you only have 2. A right bus and a left. The only time to use a bus is when you want to record more than one thing onto one track.

To do this you have to pan the channels HARD left or right depending on which bus you are recording onto, and you HAVE to pan all other tracks the opposite way, otherwise they will go onto the bussed track.

I hope this answers your question.
