I am a new user (just picked up 2nd hand 4416) and I'm doing all the upgrades to it. I upgraded to V.2.12 and have a listed 40GB drive on it's way. The question I have is how do you install/replace the CD-RW drive. As the old drive is SCSI, where /how do you replace the ribbon cable and setup/configure the new drive to work correctly? Thanks for any help you can provide.

hmmmmmm............

if you can change a scsi interface to an atapi (ide or eide) without some hardware going in or out, I will be AMAZED.

is it a scsi or ide hard drive?. If it is ide you may have a prayer. otherwise, I would not be able to begin to suggest where to start. do you know, for certain positive, like you have read it on the yamaha web site, that this can be done?

usuall most of the drive interface is on a single chip, one for eide or ide, one or more form scsi. there are only a handful of companies that make either, I don't know of anyone that makes a two in one chip. if its not there now....

Yea, I really thought it was strange to see this listed as new supported hardware at the Yamaha site. I went back to read it very carefully and noticed that in 2002 Yamaha came out with an updated AW4416A (A-for ATAPI) model. I guess I'll try and find out if I can switch/upgrade one of the boards to have this option available. I really appreciate the fast reply on this post---thanks!!!

Well......as my last post said, I guess I can't upgrade my AW4416 from SCSI to ATAPI without replacing boards........I now have a new question. The original SCSI CD-RW that is in my current machine is too noisy from the built in fan on the CD-RW (this was a known issue on the older AWs). I would upgrade to a faster SCSI drive if it's compatible with my 4416....I was looking at the Yamaha CRW3200SZ SCSI-3 Internal as a possible replacement. Has anyone upgraded their SCSI drive on their AW4416s? Also, do the newer SCSI drives have fans like the older units? I also wonder if the older SCSI 1 or 2 specs would work with a ultra SCSI-3 drive.......Last question......Is the ultra SCSI-3 cable different than the older SCSI standards and would the older ribbon cable fit???? Anyway, sorry for asking so many questions-----I really do appreciate any help that you can provide about this issue.

Thanks, sunEdays
