I have a DVD player on my home system that won't play CD/Rs - can I get around this when recording my own music on my PC or is it hardware related?

Many DVD players do not play CD-Rs.... if they do, they say it specifically on the box or in the manual.

but the question is why - is it possible to format the data in some way during the burn to allow it or is it the laser configuration in the unit?

If your DVD is not designed to read CD-R, then the only way you could "configure" the data to make it readable is to remove your CDRW drive and replace it with a DVD burner. ;)

Without going into a huge amount of technical detail (which is actually beyond my comprehension), the discs (although shaped the same) are totally different.

Through some investigation, it turns out the laser wavelength is shorter in DVD players, because of the compactness of the data and the reflectivity of CDrs is not as good as commercial CDs and DVDs. But, I heard a CDr/w may work - I'll try and get back

Most newer DVD players will read CDRs - consumers bitched about it loudly! But Bruce is right, the early ones do not, and a few of the new ones too.

If you are curious whether a new one does or does not, check the Crutchfield web site, most every player they sell they list specifically if it plays CDRs or not. And any of the newer DVD drives that advertise themselves as "MP3 compatible" will read CDRs.
