CD-R Player through ref monitors?

O.k., so here's what might be one of the most basic questions ever asked on this entire site:

1. I'd like to purchase a CD player with R and RW capability. Would I be able to run such a unit through my Alesis M1 Active reference monitors?

2. Any recommendations on such a CD player, especially rack mountable, up to about $500?

3. Would it be a good idea to use a patch bay so that I wouldn't have to constantly switch cables between my monitors, the CD player, and my humble but trusty little Porta 02 MkII?

You can buy any CDR-W player you want. Money mostly dictates quality, depending on what you want. [Sounds redundant]

I run my CD through my Yamaha integrated amplifier which also supports two tape decks, phono, [remember those?] Aux, and my MD8.

Just a flick of a button puts me in whatever mode I need; record from either tape deck or CD to tape or whatever.

So, if you buy a CD player, it has ins/outs. You need to send the signal into something that will make it produce amplified sound which will go to your monitors and, then, your ears.

Suggest you audition CD players and see what your ears like.

Features are also important.


Shop around, look around, and spend money to keep the ecomony going and my SS checks in the mail each month.

My monitors are active, bi-amped. Can't I just run the CD player straight into them?

I'm sure you can run your CDR through the amped speakers. My only question is, can you plug in the RCA plugs into your monitors?

As I don't have powered monitors, I'm not sure; however, somebody out there like Bruce or Dobro should know!

Scratch that....

...sorry, haven't had my coffee yet. The monitors have 1/4" inputs. No problem though, as a good pair of RCA -> 1/4" cables can fix that....so, still coolness!
 
Do these monitors have some kind of volume knob on them?

Otherwise, if you go direct from your CD player, you will be going full out volume. That's where a preamp is handy.

Yes, Emeric. Each monitor has its own volume knob.

Could I run the CD-R through any old off-the-shelf mic pre-amp? I've been thinking about getting an ART TubeMP Dual Mic Preamp or an ART 259 Tube Channel. So, with one of those, I could control the volume of the CD-R?

Sure a stereo preamp would work fine. Not to sure about using a ART though. I'd want to keep the signal fairly uncoloured coming from cd-source. It would work well enough though.

Thanks again, Emeric. Any suggestions for a preamp that would keep the signal clean? How would the ART influence the signal? Too much tube warmth?
 
Don't run a CD player into a preamp!

CD players are consumer line level. Preamps are designed to boost weak signels from stuff like mics and gutiar pickups. What you want is a small line mixer. M-Audio makes some simple little line mixers than will give you control over the level of the signel going into the montiors.

The Porta 02 MkII is a 4 track tape based recorder isn't it. Most of those little recorders can be used as a mixer but they may degrade the signel from the CD player.

Mackie, Soundcraft, Behinger and even radio shack all make cheep little mixer that shouldn't effect the sound too much or at all(well the first two shouldn't have any effect). Same goes for the M-Audio Mixers they shouldn't have any effect on the sound either. Also you can run the output from the MkII can run into the mixer so there is no need for repatching.
