I need to make good quality pre-masters for the mastering house.
Which is the best format?

And could I get some suggestions on various brands, models
Such as the Alesis Masterlink etc.

Thank you

If you're sending out raw tracks to be mastered, most would welcome 24-bit 44.1kHz mixes. If the sound REALLY warrants it, such as quiet, dynamic classical, maybe go to 88.2 kHz.

Masterlink (CD-24) discs are almost always welcome anywhere. Even if a house doesn't have a ML, it's nothing really more than 24-bit AIFF files.

Of course, check with the particular mastering facility. :)

Since they will be going to your facility, I should be checking with you.

 You shock me, sir.

In that case, gee... You could really... Uhh... :o I "guess" my favorite would be a Masterlink CD24 at 44.1kHz (or higher if you'd like).

That gives a quick, easy option of playing directly from the ML through outboard D-A into the analog garden, or still an easy format if brought into the DAW before any processing.

I'm not a fan of most Alesis stuff... But I tell ya', that Masterlink is something else.

Of course, if the ML isn't an option, 24-bit 44.1 WAV or AIFF is generally the same thing.

Just a small FYI - My father passed away a few days ago and I'm leaving town for a few days to handle some family "healing." :( In case you're sending anything off soon... Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you or anything.

John -

Sorry to hear about your Dad, same thing happened to me last year at this time.

Best to you and your family.

My deepest sympathies

I, also, lost my daddy a year ago this August...dont listen to any clown who tells you that time heals all wounds, because that is bullshit...I know I won't ever get over it...the music helps...see the track "Richard's message" at www.wire.fm/?artist=MULCHEFYE...he sent me a very vivid dream a while back, and this tune is a direct result...I literally woke up and started writing...check it out, I hope it's universal message will bring you some comfort...stay strong and forget that bullshit about "putting the past behind you" and "getting on with your life"...people who say such things do not understand the fundamental changes we are going through

peace out
