Say one wants to do self release a CD. This individual has finished the recording/mixing/mastering process.

How much do CD's cost to print typically?

If one were to buy a CD printer to print there own artwork, is a certain type of CDR required?

Are those cardboard CD sleeves available blank, and how can one self print on them?

I like these guys cause they do short runs - contact them and get a 20-50 CD run for cheap and see if you like them.

As for buying a CD Printer, a good quality one (that won't "rub off" or fade soon after would cost around 2-3 grand. There's some decent ones in the $1200.00 to $1500.00 range, anything cheaper and ... well... you get what you pay for.

Hmm, the site looks good at least. Do their price rates include packaging? Or are packaging costs calculated separately?

a lot of the time its onyl a few cents more to get a company that knows what they're doing to make you a CD-R release than it would be to buy the pack of CDRs alone.. you'll probably never recoup the cost of the machine

Here's what I do: Send them a detailed list of what you want from them (Like This)
-----------------------
50 CDs Full color print on the disk
4 panel insert full color
back insert 2 sided full color
clear jewel cases (so the inner graphic can be seen when CD is removed)
I will provide all art work in Photoshop format (Please send me your templates)

Can you give me a quote on what this will cost?
------------------------

I ordered pretty much the above package from them last summer - it cost me $129.00 Canadian - well worth the cost I think.

Don't forget to request their templates for whatever Photo Editing software you're using and when you place the image in the templates, MAKE SURE they "bleed over" the lines - the cutting equepment used (even by the REAL big companies) isn't perfect and if the image is EXACT to the template size you'll end up with "cut lines" - which is white lines at the bottom or top where the cutter was slightly offset to the template. A good bleed is 2-3mm better safe than sorry.

For another option, take a look at Mixonic.com.

I would def. get it professionally done. The cost of doing it yourself with decent results is too high. My fiance has a prindter that prints onto CDs and the ink is about $94.00 per fill, and it goes FAST!
