i'm looking for a one-CD player with digital outputs to copy master CDs mixed down from my tascam 488 to make master clones without going thru D/A filters. online search has been frustrating... does anybody know of a decent-quality unit that doesn't break the bank?

Sony

A friend with a local studio was looking to do the same thing. I took him down to Fry's and he got a $150 SONY consumer CD player with optical digital out. Worked great first time out. Even sends the info to the dubbing deck to start recording! Coaxial is a bit more rare in a cheapo player, but you can get a converter to bridge the gap between the two S/PDIF formats. Either way your content never leaves the digital domain.

wow, that sounds nigh perfect -- do you happen to know what model? i've visited the sony site and it's so huge it's a bit convoluted...also spotted a marantz 5-platter w/ coax out at my local hock shop for $99 but it's awful big for my backroom studio and dunno anything about marantz' quality.

That sounds like a cool deal for that Marantz. Just don't let Monty know or he'll be at your house trying to buy it.
