CD drive on Yamaha AW4416

My AW4416 doesn't recognise the presence of any CD whatsoever in the drive - I've tried CD-RW, CD-R, commercially recorded CD and even a lens cleaner! Has anyone come across this and know what the problem might be?
 
I'd wondered if it was faulty but another 4416 (admittedly of the same vintage) is showing exactly the same symptoms so I thought it was worth asking the question. I'm not sure how old they are - it didn't come to me new.
