CD Covers and Labels?

It may sound like a big ordeal, but I just do it while watching TV and will do about 25 a night.

Not bad... what kind of enamel are you using? Gotta watch for some... they'll "eat" the plastic over time...

How do you build a caddy? Does it print in full color, and how's the quality? For the CD, jewel case, and a 4 panel insert, it comes to $1.80? Did you use high-gloss photo paper for the insert, and is that included in the cost? I think you talked me into buying one.

I just took some card stock type paper, (posterboard?) maybe two layers plus a sheet of regular paper, guled them togather in a stairstep layering to about the same thinkness a CD, ran it though and printed using regular cd lableing software to find out where to cut the hole for the CD, cut the hole than put another plane piece of paper on the bottom (so the cd won't fall though). Yes it's a color printer, it's got a manual straight though paper path so I just put it in the back print and it comes out the front (top loader won't work unless modified) the max paper size the printer can handle is about 48", so I could make a long caddy and probably print around 8 CD's at once (I've just been too lazy to make one I waisted 10-15 CD and 3 trys on the caddy till I got it right). the jewel cases are cheap, and I just used Neeto (fellows) Matte inserts, also shrink wrap is cheap too (but I let people put their own on). quality is good enough to sell in your local record stores. The whole reason I did this was because I recorded my sister's CD, and she just used the regular CD lables and she left one out in the car one day and it just started to bubble up, she started to look online, and for "on CD full color printing" with 4 panel inserts were way up there in price. I would be nice to get one with a hopper and robotic arm...but $1200+...and I'm getting the same quality!!!

P.S. I even factored in the cost of ink.
 
Does the printer print photo-quality, or is it real grainy? Also, are the Neeto inserts professional looking? So I can buy this cheap printer, print directly on CDs and print inserts on the Neeto inserts. The CDs are dry, I spray them with a clear coat. Then, package them up with the insert and CD in a jewel case, and I've spent less than $2 and some time? I'd buy a printer if I found one for sale.

I'm familiar with that model printer... I've sold more than a few to customers in the recent past... I can attest to the print quality... it's excellent... I just never thought of doing that with it before :D :D :D :D

Interesting thread. I've been thinking about this myself. I'd just like a way to do a handful at a time. Those stick on labels are a joke, and my car CD player won't eject them because they increase the thickness just enough to catch in the deck.

Has anyone checked out the duplication service that Musicians Friend is advertising? Just looking to see if anyone has had luck with it.

Wow... price wise it sounds much cheaper than the quote I got from moderncd.com ... but uploading my songs online? If they're talking about using MP3s then decompressing them, I dunno... now if they allow you to upload a CD ready WAV than sure......

The super pro pack works out to a bout $0.50 more per CD than my quote, but they do full color printing on the CD ... moderncd.com was only doing B&W on the CD itself...

also on the MF "SuperProPak", you might want to call them just to be sure it's "full PHOTO color on CD printing", because they say "Thermal color printing directly on the disc face" every other place I've seen it's only 1 to 4 colors with thermal, just something to check on! One more thing, it sounds like you might have to assemble them yourself "Clear jewel cases and shrink-wrap included".

have you had luck printing any yet?
I just looked and I use Allpro clear enamel, just got a can from the hardware store. Because I made my own caddy I could use any software. And you can just look on line for cheap inserts. Let me know how you make out.
 
The printer should be here today. I'm at school right now, so I don't know if it came already. How to do you tell the software where to print at, so it actually prints on the CD and not on the caddy?

I'm guessing it will come with the software, in either case, it will most likley use same standard label layout (the same as if your going to print one one of the stick-on labels, but instead of puting the label sheet though your putting the caddy though), once you get it down it's real easy, the only thing to watch for is dust and lint, especially when you put on the clear coat, whatever lint or dust falls on will just have to stay there, if you try to pick it out or even blow it off (any little drop of liquid...spit) you'll most likely have a nice coaster to set your drink on
 
I'm trying to set the printer up now. I didn't get any software. The guy told me I could use any software I wanted to. The back paper tray is up at an angle. I'm guessing that's going to have to be flat for a CD. How do I do that?

When your going to print you set the printer up for "manual feed", the printer has a "straight though paper path", you just stick it in from the back. First print a test run on some plain paper, and use the adjustments in the software till it lines up with the caddy, I use the software that came with my Yamaha F1 burner.
 
I ordered some CDs from eBay today. I got two hundred, 100 white and 100 silver. I'm also looking for inserts. I found 100 of them for $10, but they are just 2 panel. I also found 50 slim case inserts at Radio Shack for $10. I'm thinking I should probably get some of each incase the band doesn't want 4 panels or fat cases. The closest Office Max doesn't even have fat cases, it's all slim.

I just started printing (paper) with my BJC-6000 and it's quite disappointing. The first couple of prints were wavy and uneven. I tried printing an email and it came up as needing the heads aligned. I clicked on the align heads button in maintenence, but it didn't help much. I then tried it again and click on print slow but better. That got everything straight, but there was still some color splatches on a couple spots. Would changing the ink cartridges help (it doesn't say it's low)? If I use that photo ink, would the quality be better? Do you print the CDs with the photo ink?

I just use regular Ink, I might try photo Ink. If the caddy is thick and the printing head rails have been raised to account for it, that might be causing the problem with regular paper, because my caddy is only as thick as a cd(plus one sheet of paper) I didn't have to adjust my rails. Have you tried doing a "Deep Cleaning"?
