Evening,

I just upgraded to XP and found that Easy CD Creator 3.0 is not compatible. They want $100 bucks for a 5.0 upgrade (I'm assuming that version is compatible).

What are my best options?

Thanks,
Rusty K

I would get NERO. It is really good. Roxio (adaptec) is also good. I don't think there is a workaround or anything for that problem. When I got XP, I just got NERO.

Misterque, I didn't know that plextor made s/w. Is it really good?

>Roxio (adaptec) is also good

That IS EZ-CD creator :)

>They want $100 bucks for a 5.0 upgrade

I've used ver 3 for years on my older system under Win98.
When I got a new system and Win XP, it came with my burner and it's not an upgrade- it's a DOWNgrade. They eliminated the jewel-case insert design/print function. It was never very good but now it's completely GONE! If you're gonna actually buy burning software, Nero is a good choice.

XP has some built-in burning capability as do many audio apps.
Also check out shareware/freeware if you're loathing the prospect of actually *shudder* buying this SW.

Not sure about the latest versions of CD Creator, but generally the OEM versions that ship with drives is the basic version. Even older versions of the Deluxe have more whistles and bells than the OEM versions, so this is probably why the "downgrade" - The deluxe version still claims to have all the graphics, etc... Free Is Good!

Hey,

I did notice that there is some CD burning capabilitiy built into XP's Media Player but so far I can't get it to recognize my burner, TEAC 4X12.

I'll look around.

Thanks,

Since you are using XP could you elaborate a bit on the built in firewall capabilities. Is the XP firewall adequate? I sure would like to avoid running antivirus software if possible.

Thanks,

The firewall has worked for me, but I still have Norton for checking email. Somebody hacked through my brothers XP firewall, though.

>I sure would like to avoid running antivirus software if possible.

I can't tell ya anything about XP's Firewall.

I use EZ-Trust Anti Virus. Doesn't seem to mess with my system.
I wouldn't use Norton if ya paid me...

Since I'm on cable- I use Zone Alarm. It's unreal how many hits I find in the intrusion attempt log.

>Even older versions of the Deluxe have more whistles

Maybe I'm confused. My version 5.0 says it's "Deluxe".

Perhaps I need the Mega Ultra Platinum Deluxe Version? :D

Zone Alarm

drstawl,

I have Norton, a dial modem and Zone Alarm.....but Emeric turned me onto EZantivirus. Now I don't know just what to use. I really liked the user friendly EZanti. and it was after installing ZA and Adsubtract when my old OS (ME) started going completely bananas.

I took Emerics advice and uninstalled Norton to try EZ. I kept ZA as my firewall though. I would like to go with just one program that keeps me safe.

Yes I noticed a lot of intrusions as well on the ZA event log but I was never sure which ones were malicious. Then I wondered if the firewalls just threw up a challenge to would be malicious hackers. Damn what a confusing mess

Thanks,

My new Dell PC with XP came with Roxio's EZ CD creator 3.x and I since "upgraded" to 5.0 for $70 bucks or so, primarily to use the jewel insert capabilities. Well, the jewel art function worked ok but it uses a proprietary file format so you dont get a jpg or bitmap file to submit your art to a cd duplication house. Also, I never could get the cd burning function to work because it has "initialization" problems. I went to the Roxio website discussion forum and came across Roxio explaining that there was some virus that caused the problem and suggested that users should check with their antivirus software company to see if it could detect it. I never bothered because I use my Masterlink for making cds. Bottom line - out $70 for crap Roxio software. My two cents.

Isn't it just typical?

I bet that the EZ CD Creator software was probably the most widely used for burning and what happens....they get greedy and now their reputation goes to hell.

I snagged Nero today at a Fry's Electronics. We just had a store open her two or three months ago. They had it on sale for $59.99 with a $20 rebate.

Use Sygate SPF for the firewall or Zonealarm. (Zonealarm is the more consumer friendly "canned" firewall, but SPF is more customizable.) I've had plenty of attacks while running SPF, but no one has ever gotten through.

For burning, I just use Windows XP's built in CD burner... To burn files you just open Windows Explorer and drag the file onto your CD Drive,... to burn music you use Windows Media Player. Get the latest version of Media Player from Windows Update.

That's primarily what I like most aboot XP. I have a lot less third party apps installed on my system now, since most of the functions I need are built into XP (CD burning, zip compression, media player, etc. etc.)

I wouldn't use the XP firewall though. :p
