My Hewlett-Packard CD burner is acting up, possibly becoming unusable for various reasons. The symptom I want to describe here is this: I can open the tray okay, and write stuff to disks, but when I push the button to eject the disk, it doesn't work. The only way I can spring the disk is to reboot the computer, at which point the CD burner releases the captive.

Anyone have any idea what's going on or how to deal with it? A bullet through its head? A trip to the country? A retirement package, perhaps?

What burning program are you using Dobro? Some of them require that you eject the CD through the program as it locks the CD burner when it is burning and won't let it be openned when it is burning.

cheers

Mine does the same thing randomly- model:H.PCDWRITER PLUS 7500 external,\adaptec burning software.
I have not heard good things about H.P stuff, usually when it does this, I just click on my computer on the desktop, and right click on the offending drive and select eject- this USUALLY works, although there have been a few times when I had to unplug the power cord from the drive[ probably the same as your reboot].
good luck

John, I'm using Adaptec. I'll try the point and click eject, like Shreadzilla. Thing is, this didn't use to be required. I used to be able to open and close the drive bay using the button. Something's changed.

Ya gotta make your CD burner feel special.
Take your CD burner out for a special candlelit dinner. Tell it flattering little lies. Never mention another CD burner in it's presence.

Hix - the simplicity of intelligence of most of my piece of gear means that it sees through my insincerity every time. It appreciates the attention, certainly, but is not fooled. My desire for reliable results exceeds my appreciation by a factor of 10. Perhaps it's different with you and your gear. Lucky bugger.

Check to see if you have another program trying to access teh drive. Such as a mp3 player. The drive may not have been released yet.

The Adaptec S/W may be hanging on to the CD device, and will prevent the CD from being ejected. When you use an application (e.g. Explorer) to eject the disc, you will get a dialog box asking whether you want to "finish" the disc (making it compatible with most CD readers, including very old ones), or leave it "unfinished" so more data can be written to it. From what I remember, if you press the "eject" button while the Adaptec S/W has control of the CD device, it will not eject the disc.

Hope this helps -

I dumped my HP 7200i for a Compro CDWriter. Now I don't have to make sure the CDR Media matches the color of my coffee table when I shop for them because I don't make coasters anymore more. :-)

I got my HP second hand and it is well known that the older generation HP CDwriters dies early.

Well, good news for all of you out there who have been suffering sleepless nights over the problem with my CD burner. I might have stumbled on the answer. A few months ago, I got rid of just about everything from my taskbar so that Windows will load faster, and so that I have fewer applications that might distract Windows when I'm tracking. Anyway, what I noticed is this: whenever I load Adaptec to burn a CD, I can open the CD tray any way I want - click eject, push the button, or just growl like Tom Jones. It seems that Adaptec needs to be upfront in the system.

oohhhh stuff it.I read every post but the last one, which really closes this thread-forget I said anything;)
