Just thought I would start a CCRMA thread. I'm interested in using it and can see that there is a steep learning curve. I decided to build a linux box today to run Rosegarden in. In looking over the docs I see that CCRMA comes with rosegarden. Not bad.
I took an old PIII system I had sitting in the garage and took it into work. At lunch I discovered that the heatsink just won't stay on the 1GHz CPU so I picked up a new motherboard and dual core pentium (1.8 GHz) and a gig of core. Put it in the case and used it to test some disk for a while.
Loaded fedora core 6 during a break and updated it all. Then left it running tests when I drove home.
Then after dinner I installed the CCRMA suit over the network. The box is still at work so getting X to home is slow. Rosegarden comes up and jackd runs too. Looks like a good install.
Now comes the hard part. Learning to use it. I'll need to get a midi interface for it sometime soon. I don't plan on using the onboard sound (basic intel motherboard) I do plan on getting something like the m-audio audacity 2496 to start with.
Where am I going with this? Well I'm mostly interested in midi with hardware synth. Very much into analog recording too. So hardware synth to reel to reel sounds good to me.
I'm hoping that this thread will be helpful in my learning and for others thinking of Linux based DAW.
