Mistral

RyosaMusic
This is the latest offering of mine, for my project Mistral, it's got some heavy metal feel to it mixed with melodic death, hope you like it.. some of my music is darker and heavier but this one I am going for the upbeat "rock out" thing.. anyways let's hear some opinions..

Nice, there's some elements from Maiden and on the other hand, some growling type singing. I'm not personally fond of the growling. I think the snare drum had a little too much compression. Guitars sounded pretty cool, although the verse parts would have worked better IMO, if the left guitar and right guitar would play the same thing. More tighter maybe. Not bad, still. Don't take my word for it, though. Listen to other people's opinions too. :)

Thanks Cranky... I had a listen to your priest cover too, and that's some nice playing. I could totally tell the drums were programmed though since that is a quest of mine as well.. could you tell mine were fake? I used some pretty elaborate techniques.. in fact, the whole recording except the right hand side rhythms and the solo is me. that is why the guitars aren't dead tight with each other, I've never even met the guy in person, we just did a collaboration on the song. I think it turned out quite well considering.

Great guitar sound. I agree on the compression. The snare doesn't have enough attack transient getting through, IMHO. I dig the tune.

yeah I gathered that. couldn't really figure out how to fix it but I may be able to solve it now, I have it sounding quite clear and fat right now on this new song I'm working on. I'm using a different compressor that is a bit more intuitive so that helps.

Hey, this tuned reminded me of In Flames a little. Good song, excellent guitar-age. I do agree about the snare, the poor thing sounds squashed to death.

Keep up the good work.

I didn't notice your drums were fake, though I didn't listen to them that carefully, but I usually can tell fake drums right away, so you did a good job. I know now, that my drums sounded fake. The thing is, I did the basic mistake, by mixing the song too soon. I should have waited overnight, so my ears are not too much used to the sound. I noticed especially my kick drums went a bit overkill. But thanks anyway :)

Mistral,

Cool tune. I agree with the previous comments about the drums. This recording had a bit of a "Cradle of Filth" sound to it, a bit thin, but still cool. Also, MAIDEN-ISH guitars were cool. Overall good tune, I'd like to hear your heavier stuff.

I think the dbl bass starting at 1:07 clues you in about the "fake" drums, or not....in which they do sound fake, TO ME at that part. But, on the other hand, I don't really give a hoot..because I like the sound of them anyway:) Nice tune all around, cept for the aformentioned snare....Can't understand many of the lyrics...but does that matter;) ?

obviously you haven't heard what many metal drummers can do then. listen to nick barker of dimmu borgir/ex cradle of filth, or the guy in cryptopsy.. there are even others who are faster and tighter at double bass than on that chorus.. it's a fairly mid tempo song.

thanks though

yeah...I live under a rock.

I guess I shouldn't praise the old farts like ginger baker, billy cobham (hey jan hammer), bonhom, etc...etc..anymore ..need to get down on my knees to the almighty death metal drummers that sound like a drum machines.

You know, I like the sound of drum machines, many of the times, but NOT always, over real drummers actually. Your "obviously" stmnt, leaves me a little stand-offish, however.

You obviously have never had anyone critique your music before

of course I have. you make it sound like I chewed you out royally..
just about every person has commented on the snare but I'm not being snide about that am I? I will use relevant advice to my advantage in the future, I was merely commenting that what you considered fake sounding is actually quite standard in this genre.
as you said, in your opinion, but my reply was meant to offer you some basis for comparison.

slowwww today..

Anyways, everybody please check out a new version I uploaded and tell me if you think it's an improvement, I tried to fix several elements, such as the "thin" mix, the snare is now completely new and has more attack, also took some advice from sound on sound magazine and used cakewalk's tape sim for some saturation and warmth on a few elements.. same url as before.

I noticed, that the snare is still too much compressed for my tastes, but don't take my word for it. I don't have the first version on my computer, and I don't have that good of a memory when it comes to mixes. I'm comparing this based on my memory of the first version. I guess this is an improvement. It's at least a little fuller, if I remember correctly.

Mistral,

It doesnt sound too different to me, but I still enjoyed listening to it again.

erm..

if you say so.. the snare is different, doesn't have anywhere close to as much compression, the mix has about 5x more low end.. well thanks anyways.

I hereby dub the... IRON CARCASS!!
haha..

Good job man. The guitars are pretty raw.
The only thing that rubs me wrong are the drum machine cymbals.
I can hear those suckers from a mile away. (I used to use them all the time). The snare and kick sound great though. The toms sing nicely too. Perhaps you could kick the vocals up just a bit though.
