How do I properly transfer an old cassette to WAV so I can work with it before putting it on CD? I don't want to play the tape an excessive number of times.

You need to record it into some software package (cakewalk, cep, ce2k, sound forge...etc..) then you can clean it up before you turn it into a wave file. To do the transfer of course you will need a cassette deck, a preamp, and a sound card.

Actually you might not need a preamp since cassette decks typically output at line level - or am I wrong? But either way, you'll definitely need cables. For a typical PC soundcard you'll want two RCA plugs on one end to one stereo 1/8" miniplug on the other end.

i've done this several times 4-track - Soundcard - Protools (or whatever)- cd. works best if you have # inputs corresponding w/# of trax on your soundcard of course.
have experimented with different methods and equipment, like 4track - mixer - soundcard - protools - adat - cd... the former works best.
good software cleans it up real nice...:D

AlChuck, I believe you do need a pre for most tape decks, I do for mine anyway. I was going right into a small stereo amp. It may depend on the deck. Either way the string is as stated for doing the transfer. I just did about 40 tapes for a friend and it worked wonderfully.

Take care.

Is there a section in the FAQ about this? If not, somebody should write something up...Maybe it's just me, but I swear I see something similar to "how do i record from _______ to my computer?" almost every day...it'd be nice to have something to point people to.

(This isn't meant as anything towards the person that started the thread, just a general observation) :)

Yeah there are three or four things in that category, I agree... There is a recording FAQ, but it's not at all clear how to find it (the f.a.q. labeled button above takes you to a FAQ on the forum architecture and mechanics, not the forum content). It's three clicks away from here, first to the main site, then to FAQs/Tutorials, then to Home Recording FAQs. Once you get there, none of these top few questions are there, at least not obviously.

"How do I record LPs to CDs/MP3s"
"Why do I get nothing when I record?" (the Windows Mixer question)
"How come when I record a new track all the previous tracks are recorded again too?" (variation -- "when I record more than one track everything starts to sound strange and hollow...")

What are some others?

Dragon, how about it?

Hey AlChuck, how about the proverbial "when I try to record a second track I can't hear the original track..." (the full duplex question).

In fact, I think that question was one of my first posts.
