Is type I normal bias cassette ok to do a first ever recording ? jus to experiment with ? Ive never recorded anything before in my life...I dont even know how my tascam works...so I just wanted to play around. Not looking for a "professional" sound yet. Does this work at all?

Ya, I think your right. You shouldn't have any issues with using it for a while.

Normal bias tape will work. The only problem is it degrades rapidly if you reuse it. For basic recording and light bouncing it will work fine. By degrading i mean it gets pretty noisy if you use the same tape more than a few times. High bias tape is a little better, chrome tape (CrO2) is best if you plan to bounce tracks or do many overdubs to the original tape. If your machine has a switch for tape selection make sure it is set to the corect tape type you are using. Remember to clean the heads frequently, no matter what type of tape you use. Normal bias tape leaves a lot of residue on the heads so clean the heads after ever two or three tape passes, after each pass wont hurt but at least after three passes.

You can use regular tape just fine for messin' around. But, I think the bias on the Tascam heads are calibrated for high bias tape forumlation, ala Cr02.

You won't be able to get as hot a signal on a regular cassette and the highs will be noticeably reduced, even if your particular Tascam uses dbx, which most of them did.
