Cassette Decks

Day late and a dollar short...story of my life. Anyway, if APL is still checking this, I opted for a Nakamichi BX-100 a couple of years back used. Cool, soft-touch buttons, good sound. Nakamichi had a good rep for cassette decks.

I still browse the Naks on ebay.

geeezus. just go to any thrift store. :D Hmmmm apl. You're the last person I thought would ask about a cassette deck. Oh, btw, tell me if you hear a difference between a consumer deck and a DVD, ok? ;)

I'm not sure what APL would say, but when I try to play a DVD in my cassette deck it sounds just terrible. First I can't get the door closed without considerable force, and when I do all I hear are the spools grinding into the disk. It's not as bad as the sound when playing a DVD on my turntable, but anyway, IMO the tapes sound much better in my cassette deck. I don't know what all the hype is about with DVD. :p

silver face, large VU meters = good deck :). that's all I know :o .

I've certainly gotten more than one fine cassette deck at my favorite thrift store,..

and that's no lie! ;)

I have no idea what you're talking about, RICK.

You don't? Hmmmm, lets see, you asked:

Cassette Decks
I need one for the studio.

Any ideas?
I gave you an idea where to find them cheap. People are throwing them away in droves, as consumers climb on the digital MP3, CD, DVD bandwagons. So, does that give you a clue?

Right, got that. What I didn't get was...

Why's that?

That's the question I really don't get.

Ok, well, I thought you were "pro" digital. :)
As to the DVD, all I meant was once you get a cassette, tell us what you think sounds better. Music on DVD(or CD) or on the cassette.

As to the person who said this...

I'd submit you should get out of audio altogether before you hurt yourself. :p

When I got the turntables last year, I was really surprised how, for example, Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue sounded much more natural and open on LP. Since then I got a Rotel RCD-950 CD player and it runs with the turntable pretty well. So I've come to the conclusion that top notch DAC ain't as trivial as I thought it was. Thus, I'd suppose a high end DVD player with really good ADCs would blow a consumer level cassette deck out of the water.

Cassette deck...maybe. Reel-to-reel running at 7 1/2...not a chance. It may sound insane, but I don't buy any music that isn't in rtr format anymore. I just can't listen to CDs with any pleasure after being spoiled by tape. Just one maniac's opinion, though.
