So I want to record some quality stuff onto my 8 track. Yamaha mtx8 recorder.
I have a transistor condenser and a presonus tube preamp.
some 57s and 58s and tons of cables but I dont really know how to get "good" sound.

I can even get decent "live" recordings with me and a drummer and an amp turned up loud but I cant seem to find the sweet spot on acoustic recordings.

I really need some help.

Please reccomend some good line compressors, all purpose microphones for acoustic/vocals, preamps that you think would work well
and ONE all purpose multi-effects processor like a boss guitar floor unit or something similar that would work for flanger delay etc. when processing vocals and drums as well as guitars and what not.

thanks for your time

also I am sure there are tons of threads on here already about this stuff so if you guys would be kind enough to just point me in the right direction as I am new to this forum.
This is actually my first post. thank you for your time!!!

Are you talking 8tr cart ? (you did say "old schoolers")

i regularly help mix a band's stuff from their 8 track cassette recorder...they experiment a lot as they "don't really know what they are doing"...as such, they come up with the coolest shit. experiment.

they used to love this dbx 163...now they don't so much. their 'staple' mic is a 635 and a 57. no mic pre.

a song they recorded and we mixed ended up getting played on some ABC TV show and netted them some serious (for them) greenbacks...a few grand. pretty wild considering it was a cassette 8 track...probably only 6 of the tracks were working.
