carvin mixers

that spirit will blow the carvin away. The carvin mixers pretty much suck. They are ok for live use, but recording, they are crap. Preamps suck, eq is almost unusable, etc. You might want to look into the yamaha mg series mixers.
 
Im currently using a Carvin 8 channel SM 162 "studio" mixer mainly for drums, it doesnt suck, it sounds pretty ok for what Im using it for, each channel has an insert and the pres are definately usable. For the $239 price tag, Id say its well worth it depending on what you intend to do with it.
 
I was in your exact position quite a bit ago... while the carvin's are probably ok, you're going to spend $500 (which can be a lot of money) don't go blow it on something that's just OK... go for a soundcraft or yamaha... those things have a general reputation of being Good. While carvin can make some nice guitars, etc... I wouldn't rely on their recording equipment. Go set yourself up with an 8 or 12 channel board that is good and add preamps as you need to for your recordings.
