is that a good idea to tame reflections or not? i saw it in a rehearsal room but i don't know what the implications would be in terms of recording.

No, it isn't. It'll absorb or refract only high frequency information, leaving all the low frequency stuff totally uncontrolled. The result will be a room that's dead and boomy...very, very bad.

so what else can you add to the equation to deaden all frequencys, bass traps? thick foam?

bass traps.

Kinda hard to have too many.

Start with the corners, floor to ceiling (if possible) and straddle em.

and lava lamps. :D

Who cares once your studio burns down. Ever see carpet burn, in a vertical position? Try a piece. Watch the nylon drip...and then imagine it in your studio. Why do you think there are building codes...ie...1hr fire ratings on drywall. The people who create the building codes don't do it for fun.

At least to setting off fire works in the studio....look what it did for Greatwhite.

()

so thats a no then?

It's a big "no". :D

Small-ish rooms typically benefit the most from lots of 4" traps, a few 6" traps and superchunk-style corner trapping. The right combination of those treatments reduces decay times EVENLY rather than selectively, which results in a room that's more acoustically neutral...which is usually what people mean when they ask for "dead".
