Hello all! I just discovered this list and was overjoyed to finally find a good place to discuss home recording. Not to be one to beat around the bush I'll get right to my first question! Im trying to experiment with PC based hard disc recording. Before buying alot of stuff I do or dont need I thought Id go with my soundblaster AWE 64 value card and I got a copy of Cool Edit Pro ver 1.2 to start. Now I know this isnt the best soundcard in the world but like I said Im just experimenting right now. Heres the problem. I record a track into CEP and it sounds great. Clean, distortion free etcetc. Now then when I go to record a second track, I get this horrible hiss! It only seems to me when BOTH tracks are playing. for example I record some backing tracks from my synth. Sounds great. I add a lead guitar break say about 1 minute into the song. The song plays fine until the second track kicks in then hissssssssssssss. This happens with guitar vocals whatever doesnt matter. I cant seem to do more than one track without this happening. Is this the Soundblaster? If so why doesnt it cause hiss on the first track, only additional ones? Whew! Sorry for the long post but I have nowhere to turn around here for help on this. Thanks for any replies!! Email me directly if you want.

Does it do this when you create a virtual second track as opposed to actually recording a second track? In other words, try this:

Record two separate .wav files each being that first track you're talking about. Then
paste them together on separate tracks (don't worry about sync here- this is just a hiss test) and see if it still does the same thing.

Howdy
One og the easiest things to test is the cord the hook up your mixer to the computer. most hiss noise is caused by bad cable plugsor dirty connections on the RCA plugs

Well a few developments in this saga. I've about eliminated cords or any adapters from being the culprit simply because if these were bad I would think there would be hiss on ALL tracks recorded not just additional ones. Also I've sent email to Creative Labs with a full explanation of the trouble and can you believe Ive heard nothing at all!?? Go figure. Tried to reach them on the phone and that was another joke. Waited for 20 minutes and still never got to talk to anyone about this so I gave up. Im still prodding around with various suggestions and possibilities but no luck yet. Maybe Ive got a bum soundcard. Anyone else successfully using an AWE 64 for MULTI-track recording?

You probably won't hear back from CL for a LONG time, though you'll probably hear SOMETHING. You should try their news server, there're some people on there that can help, including CL reps. I think it's news.creative.com or something...check their web page for more info.

One thing I'm wondering, do you just hear the hiss WHILE recording? If so it could be a problem with the card's full duplex operation. I know that the SB16 and AWE32 cards are "full duplex", but you only hear 8-bit playback while recording. Sucks!

To Slack,
No hiss during recording only playback. I forgot all about the CL news server, thanks for reminding me. I might find out something useful there. Meanwhile a new soundcard might be in order simply for the fact that IF Im going to do this I will need a better card anyway so why not eh? Thanks!!

Hi. Untill I got my Darla card, I used my SB AWE. I used to get the same hiss when I recording but not playback. I noticed when the computer was running other programs at the same time, it did that. Try keeping the memory free. I don't know if this is the solution, but its worth a try.

Adam.
