Hello,

Just upgraded to a 1Ghz Thunderbird. Since, I am unable to record. There has been some jumping during playback but whenever I click the monitor button in prep. to record the playback jumps wildly.....skips all over.

I just spent an hour playing with the buffer settings and nothing I did improved the problem.

What is going on?

Geez.....Now Im starting to think this isnt a buffer issue.....it may be something with your hard drive setup....Thats not my area of expertise, but Im sure someone will glance upon this to offer their expertise....Help- Slackmaster where r u!!!!!!!

Gidge,

I've emailed Flavio....but wouldn't a hard drive setup problem show up somewhere else too...like my wave editor?

Damn frustrating....I really don't trust the techs that have been working on my puter. Up front when asking about the upgrade I questioned about the compatibility of the old motherboard. They assured me that is was. They replaced the power supply under warranty(labor) which was why I took it in. Then after a week of not being able to boot they called me and said that they had to replace the motherboard, said it was fried because of the power supply problem. Well the damn thing was working when I last shut it down. They didn't charge me labor on the motherboard so I didn't feel like argueing with them over it.

The point is it could be some other setup problem....they are not too swift.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,
RK

Are you the guy with the zip drive on the same channel as your hard drive?

What are all these (labor) remarks? Are you paying for replacement parts? Do you realize that you shouldn't have to pay to replace equipment that is under warranty? If you are, then you're getting fucked. Not screwed, fucked. It takes about 15 minutes to replace a power supply. 20 minutes to replace a motherboard with the same model of motherboard.

So when you had your motherboard upgraded to take the 1Ghz Athlon CPU, did they leave the existing operating system intact? Probably did, the lazy bastards :)

Slack,

I don't think that's me.....but you are right I am getting fucked. I've got to learn more about the tech side of these issues. Actually I probably could have installed everything myself but it's the setup stuff I'm lame on.

Needless to say I won't be going back to these people. $55 per hr. 3day turnaround, more for emergencies. basically I had to pay for parts and one hour labor. If they did the job I wouldn't complain but I practically had to walk them through myself. They made me bring all my periferals (sp?) in to be checked out. You know how it is ...you know your being fucked but you need your computer and to pull their plug just means taking the gear somewhere else and starting all over.

Flavio has emailed me back with a shitload of things to check out. At the top of the list is reinstalling soundcard drivers, updated ones if they are available. I use a LynxOne and I got help from sonusman on the install...but that was a few months ago and I have a hard time keeping things that I'm not using constantly in this brain.

By same OS you mean ME which is what I was running?

What would you suggest...at this point?

Something tells me it is the drivers but hell what do I know?

Rusty K

I think he's hinting at a fresh install of your operating system, ME if that is what you are running.....just pop in the disk and install it....

and make sure you let them that you were fucked, and tell everyone you know how they fucked you....bastards.....

If the motherboard was changed to a different model (i don't care if it's *compatible*) then they really should have reinstalled windows. Now, it's not such a big deal on Windows 9x as is it on NT, but it's still a deal.

Yes, reinstall drivers, reinstall n-Track. That might shake it all loose. Worst case scenario is that you wipe everything and start over with a fresh windows install, and a fresh install of all your apps....so you might prepare yourself a bit for that (make sure you know what you need to save, and how to save it).

Good luck man.

Slackmaster 2000

Oh shit I hope I don't have to do all that. I'll go ahead and do the ME reinstall and wait for info from Lynx.

Thanks,
RK

Update...

I have Vegas as well as Ntrack though I haven't used it. I thought I'd check it out to see if it worked. I recorded no problem...smooth as silk.

So now where am I? Reinstall NTrack? Or are we back to buffering?

RK

We're right where we just were...REINSTALL N-TRACK :) It only takes a sec.

Reinstallation can do wonders. Besides, you won't like working in Vegas after using n-Track for a while! Been there man.

slack,

No man I didn't emply that I wanted to switch. I love Ntrack and I'm learning to get around in it pretty well now. Just need it to work.

Thanks,
RK

What OS?

Don't think I saw anywhere, so I thought I'd ask.. What operating system are you using? Also, what's the speed of your hard drive?

Have you considered using the aux effects sends? There is no good reason to have a separate reverb for each track when you can use one reverb and send whatever track is necessary through the aux effect send.

Have you tweaked your operating system? I'm running Windows 2000 on an ancient Pentium 2 box 400Mhz with only 128MB of RAM and getting up to 25 tracks in n-Track. CPU goes up to about 65% during playback with no skips. I really attribute this to my 7800 RPM new hard drive, and a totally optimized Windows 2000 install. Absolutely NOTHING is running in the background on my DAW that isn't totally necessary.

Hey DF,

Your post relates to another thread I started here called "CPU Redlining" where many of the things you mentioned where posted for my enlightenment.

I upgraded to a 1Ghz Thunderbird, 256MRAM, ME. The faster CPU has helped a lot.
