Can't record automation

I have just picked up a Peavey Studiomix and decided to get to the bottom of automating Sonar. I tried some time ago with a Tascam TM-D1000 and could never get it to work, then forgot about it for a while.

I now find I have the same problem I had then - the RECORD AUTOMATION button in the transport is greyed out, and won't let me switch it on. Why?

The Studiomix was dead easy to set up, and when I move the controls Sonar responds. Its just that nothing can be recorded. I've tried just doing it by pressing the RECORD button, I have made sure the controls I want to automate are armed, and the tracks armed. But no use - I presumeably have to press the RECORD AUTOMATION button, but it is not active to be pressed.

There must be some general setting that is stopping it from working. Anybody have any idea what this might be?

I'll ring tech support on Monday and really see this through, 'cause I NEED automation. But if anyone can help before then, please do.

Thanks

You must arm the controllers for automation. Just right-click on it (for example the volume) and select "Arm for automation". Then press the button next to the Recording-button and fade away! :D

And if you're running Win2000/XP, the Studiomix won't work! :(

The tracks can not be armed for record, if that's what you mean. I fell for that one once, that's for sure.

I've already explained that I've done all that, but the button next to the recording button is greyed out and can't be pressed.

Well, I am running Windows 2000, and the Studiomix does work (in the sense that it moves the faders on screen, and the faders move in reaction to change of volume in the file). In fact this was incredibly easy to set up - it just goes.

Its just that the movements aren't recorded, and I don't believe this is a Studiomix issue, since as I said I had exactly the same problem with the TM-D1000.

Thanks anyway.

Anyone else?

Sorry, I don't have any problems with it. I just arm the controller and hit the "Record automation"-button and every movement is recorded...

Hi there, i just learned how to do this my self and it works great. first thing to do is go to the view / toolbars/ and make sure you have the automation toolbar pulled up. On that toolbar, make sure that the enable record automation button is pushed in. it's the second one from the right, the slider with the arrow. then whichever control your going to automate, fader, pan etc...right click it and arm for automation is checked. from there, make sure it's all set where you want, and by now, the record automation button should be active. it will start when you push it.... hope that helps you.
